T&P's Please

My mom is in the ER with high blood pressure and she gets really dizzy if she lays down. She's having an MRI now to check for signs of a stroke. She looks and sounds good, thankfully. I'm kind of freaking out though.

Re: T&P's Please

  • Oh Shotz, I'm sorry :( T&Ps!!!  I hope it's easily fixed and they can get her BP down.  I'm glad to hear they're being proactive with looking for what's going on.  (((hugs)))

  • Thanks, katt. She was discharged about an hour after I got there. My brother got there a while before I did. Her MRI and other tests were normal and her bp went down to an acceptable range. She still has terrible vertigo if she lies down and the ER doc couldn't really explain why. They just ruled out serious problems like a stroke or heart problem. It's frustrating not having any answers, but at least we know it doesn't appear to be something serious. She has a f/u appt with her dr on Mon, so we'll see what she says. Appreciate your T&P's! My mom is never sick, so this was very weird and worrisome.

  • Could it be just vertigo?  I've studied vestibular rehab.  If it seems to be more vertigo related, look up the epley maneuver on YouTube.  I've done it on so many people and had great results.  I hope she feels better soon.  I'm so sorry you're dealing with this.

I read about that last night and was going to watch some videos today! Can blood pressure be related to vertigo?? She's never had high bp, and it was dangerously high yesterday. I'm kind of afraid to try the maneuver cause she seriously panics when she lays down cause the room starts spinning. I'm afraid that'll cause her bp to go back up. Maybe I'll see if her dr is familiar with the maneuver at her appt...Or who is normally trained in it? You do PT, right?

  • Glad everything turned out ok. Hopefully they can find out what's going on and solve the vertigo issue.

It can be related, especially since the positions make her anxious, the anxiety itself can raise BP.  Yes PTs do  it, but you have to find someone who's been trained in it.  If she panics that bad, I would definitely wait to have a professional do it.  The maneuver itself will increase the spinning tremendously, but the good news is, one treatment typically is all it takes.

My mom just had her appt with her regular dr and her dr had experienced a bout of this type of vertigo herself! She did some tests with my mom and it appears her vertigo has already corrected itself! And her bp was back to normal! The dr said she thinks her bp was elevated b/c she was so freaked out by the vertigo. Phew, I'm so thankful everything resolved itself and it wasn't anything serious! Thanks for the T&P's!
