Car seat placement?

We have a small sedan and we are going to try to wait to upgrade our car. Since my husband is over 6", we are trying to avoid putting a car seat behind him. Is it okay to put two rear facing infant car seats next to each other (one in the middle and one behind the passenger seat)?

Re: Car seat placement?

  • Yes, this is where they are the safest anyways as long as you have the room.

  • It depends on your car.  Please look at your car manual which will dictate where car seats can be placed and how (LATCH or seatbelt).  Also read your car seat manual closely to see what is recommended - middle seats are only safest if the car seat fits correctly and safely.

  • We had just a sedan until the boys were 10m old. We had Graco Snugrides and had one in the middle and one behind the driver's seat, but one behind the passenger seat would've worked too.

    This!

I drive a Camry and am 5'8" while my husband is 6'1" ...

We went to BBB and we had originally wanted the Britax Chaperone with the roll bar that fits infants up to 4 lbs. - tons of features we wanted but my husbands shins touched the glove compartment from him knees to a few inches above his ankles!  My knees were also straddling the steering column and slightly touching.  We thought we were going to have to get a new car to make sure the 4 of us could ride safely together, but...

I literally had the Per Perego Primo Viaggio fitted this morning and we both fit in my car with no problem - it was shocking to have 6 - 7 more inches back in depth!  We didn't want to spend this much on the carseats, but it would be a lot more expensive to buy a new car so we think the $200-ish additional cost will be worth it in the long run.

All that being said, I'd place the carseats where the latches are like PP mentioned but also try a few carseats to see if one would fit behind the passenger without an issue... there might be one that surprises you.

  • That's what we're doing! We struggled with finding a car seat that would fit behind my husband who is 6'2. We have a 2009 Dodge Journey (suv/crossover) We were told the smallest you can get is a Combi. We ordered two, two different models, tried both, still a no go. So, we've decided our only option is one in the middle, one behind me (passenger). We're going with the Chicco keyfit. We took two out to the car to make sure they'd fit side by side (one in the middle, one behind passenger) and they do, and they're not cramped! Good luck!
