Beauty pageants where little girls are judged on their appearance without fake hair and lots of makeup?

I don't really think these are better.

  • Nay? I don't get it at all. There is no better way to showcase a child's talents that isn't tied into being pretty?
  • Nay.  DH's cousin does this with her daughter and it really still is the same thing as a pageant with all the glitz and glam.  They are still judged on how they look, what they can do, and how well they can "perform."  I just don't understand pageants at all.

  • I've thought about it with my daughter. She has a very outgoing personality, loves to be the center of attention and I think she's pretty cute (although I'm prejudice, lol). However, they cost a lot of money to enter and I think it's a slippery slope from natural to the Toddlers and Tiaras world. So, for now, she's in dance class and she enjoys dancing and singing for us at home.

  • No.

I'm sure they'll be judged plenty on their social media of choice, so there's no reason for them to be judged on appearance, too.

  • I guess I'm a dummy because I don't see how it's different/better.  If you want to shift the focus to actual talent or something, then why not just do a talent competition for the talent in question?  Like dance, or music, or math camp.  A competition on looks is NMS, esp. for younger kids.

I am a super fierce lurker. The other day, I was wondering where Hyfa has been.

  • Yes.

  • Not a pageant fan. I dislike the idea of "winning" based off of appearance, especially for little girls. There are more than enough years of Vogue, Elle, etc., to give my kid a complex, she doesn't need to lose a beauty contest at age 3 to start that process any earlier.
