Aurora?

I know there were one or two bumpies who liked the name Aurora or were planning to use it.

Or even if you weren't... what are your opinions on the name now, considering the tragedy in Aurora, CO?

Would it change your mind? Would it even have occurred to you?

How do newsworthy events impact your name choices?

Re: Aurora?

  • Good question. I was wondering the same thing.

  • I'll always think of Sleeping Beauty before the shootings last night when I hear that name.  If it was the name my husband and I both loved I'd still use it.

  • I would never have considered this name, it's a town near where I live and it would be odd to hear a child called the same name. I just don't like most place names, even without current events.
  • Probably not the best day to read the name Aurora after the shootings last night. But my first though is "sleeping beauty"

  • I think of Aurora, IL first. I grew up very close to there. I actually love the name.

Wouldn't have even occurred to me. Before today I didn't even know there was an Aurora, CO. I know a little girl named Aurora and still will only think of her first.

As far as newsworthy events are concerned, they don't have much of an impact for me. DD's full name is the same as a noteworthy public figure who was involved in a scandal. We knew this before she was born, but still used the name because of family significance. She's not named after that person, but I still get asked about it.

That's an interesting question.  FWIW, when I see a Columbine, I think of the school shooting.

I like the name ,nn Rory, but I'm done having kids, I think.  And if for some amazing reason I do get pregnant, it had better be a boy.

  • I read the article thismorning and had already forgotten that it happened in Aurora. So no, it wouldn't stop me from using the name if I liked it.

  • I wouldn't change it based on a tragic event. The same goes for Katrina.
  • I love the name.  It's on the list (not that I even know the sex though).  The tragedy does not change my opinion about the name at all. It slightly occurred to me but only like, yeah that's the city name.

Maybe there will be more London's this year due to the Olympics :)

  • I think of "Sleeping Beauty" when I hear Aurora. As for the shooting, I know it was in Colorado but I didn't necessarily remember the name of the town offhand. If I was planning on using the name I probably still would despite last night/ this morning.

  • I  love the name,  and I would not change it regardless of the stigma.
  • I lived in Aurora before moving to Virginia a week ago. Living there tarnished the name IMO because Aurora, CO isn't the classiest of cities. I also really don't think there is anything pretty about the pronunciation.

The shooting wouldn't change my opinion on the name had I previously liked it, I just happened to not like the name anyways.

  • I would still use it.  It's a beautiful name.

  • I would never have used the name because my bro lives in Aurora (literally around the corner from that movie theater). It also reminds me of one of the children on the sister wives show. So, to  me it isn't the tragedy, it's a whole bunch of other things altogether!

  • It was actually my middle name choice, and we're changing it. I'm due within the month, and it will still be in the news. I'm disappointed, but *I* think of it now when I hear it. If it was a year or so removed, I probably would think nothing of it, but since it's so close, time-wise, and it's such big, awful tragic news, I feel weird using the name now. This is actually my first time on the "names" board - searching for new ideas!

  • I love this name!

Even though there was a tragedy there, I honestly don't associate the girls name with the town.  I'd still use it.  It's way cute :)

  • I live in Colorado and will still use this name. I don't think people will hear her name and think of mass shootings. Especially in a couple years it won't be so fresh in people's minds.
