My LO has neuro eval last week as part of his devel peds eval. Doc said he could possibly fall on autism spectrum. This is pretty much the first time I had heard anyone say that. He is undergoing therapies for speech and sensory processing disorder. I have never really thought he would be on spectrum, but of course, it's been a question for the professionals. So I had a devel peds consult the other day and we were there for almost 2 hours. After a very long interview and eval, she said that according to the M-CHATT he didn't fall on Autism spectrum. The only thing he scored on was sensitivity to loud sounds, which she would expect from a kid with SPD. So this was great news. Of course we still will have therapies for OT and ST and follow up in a few months, but it was a relief to hear that good news.
Re: Devel. Peds and Neuro eval--good news.
Good news, indeed! My DS also has sensitivity to loud sounds (borderline SPD) and was evaluated last year (at 2.25) but didn't fall onto the Spectrum. He will end his year with EI next week (turns 3 next month) as he no longer is eligible for services but was able to finish up his annual IFSP. But we saw amazing advances in his speech and he now scores above age level for that and slightly behind in adaptive/self-care.

So the only thing that puts him on spectrum is the loud sounds?
I've been trying to avoid having him labeled. I know they've been beating around the bush--but no one has actually mentioned the spectrum to me---but kind of "waiting" to see what happens through this summer and in to this fall. They "claim" that many things they think cause a child to be labeled at an earlier age they tend to "outgrow" with maturity around the age of 4. I doubted that--BUT in the last month or so have seen a drastic improvement in my son--I can't even believe it. SOOOOO....I'm hopeful that maybe we do avoid it and see some more improvement come fall. BUT whatever it is, it is---not worried. I know he'll get the help he needs.

Notes:
In answer to your question, his first M-CHATT the only thing he scored on was loud sounds and pointing with index finger, which he does now. So the only thing that would put him on the spectrum is the loud sound thing. I find it crazy, I mean crap I don't care for loud sounds either, who does? I also didn't want my son labeled, but figured if he does fall on spectrum, we will deal with it and get him as much services as I can. No one had ever said to me they thought he might be on the Autism spectrum, so it came to me as a little bit of a blow to actually hear those words. Since my son is SPD, we have been in OT and have seen a noticeably difference with his therapies. So I feel like we are on the right track. Good luck with your son.
