Baby Names

Are the Jacksons being called Jack?

Jack is our #1 choice for DS at the moment. It's a consistently popular name, but it's not a crazy chart-climber, so I'm OK with using it.

My only concern is the popularity of the name Jackson, because I worry that the Jacksons are also being called Jack as a nn, which would essentially double the popularity of the name Jack.

If your DS is Jackson, or you know one- do they go by Jackson or Jack?

My Jackson primarily goes by Jack (I call him Jackson sometimes but I introduce him as Jack). But, the only reason we named him Jackson is so we could call him Jack after my father and my husband insisted he have a "formal" name to use if he didn't want to always go by the nn Jack.  Otherwise, I would have just used Jack as his first name.

  • I sort of thought that was why a lot of kids were being named Jackson... Jack is a great nickname, and people wanted a longer name that it could be derived from. I've never met a Jackson who wasn't called Jack.

  • I know three Jacksons. Two of them go by Jack.
  • A little boy I babysit's name is Jackson but he goes by Jax

  • My son is Jackson. We don't ever use Jack. He's either Jackson or Jacki.

  • DS1 is named Jackson and his nn at this time is Jax. This is b/c we wanted to set him apart from all of the Jacks. Jack is much more popular in my social circle than Jackson. I suspect, though, that he'll go by Jackson or Jack as he grows up. In response to PP, Jack is also a common nn of Jacob in the Jewish culture. DS happens to be named in memory of DH and my favorite grandpas named Jacob (nn Jack).

If I wanted a formal name for the nickname Jack, I would've picked John.  Keep that in mind, OP!

This is what I was thinking. Jack is a nickname for John.

  • The Jackson I know all of the females (mom, sisters, gmom and aunt) in his life call him Jackson but all of the males (dad, grandpop and uncles) call him Jack. He has a little speech impediment and he calls himself Jackie...I think he just can't say the son yet.

  • I know 8 Jacksons and about half go by Jack.
  • One of my good friends has a Jackson and he is usually called Jack. She really only calls him Jackson when he's in trouble!

But, yes... Jack is a nickname for John.  I don't think of it as a stand alone name, actually.

It is a standalone name. H's 83-year-old Grandfather is Jack. Nothing more. Derivative of the French Jacques.

This! I'm so tired of this argument. I know plenty of elderly "just Jacks" and it's also a common nn for Jacob in the Jewish culture.

It's a pretty common nickname for John.  The letters JFK may ring a bell....

No... Jacques is the french form of Jacob or James.

Jack is derived from Jackin, a diminutive of John.  But, even behind the name says it's often thought of as a stand alone name.  I was just saying that for me, I don't think of it that way because both my family and my husband's family have a many Johns and some go by Jack to lessen confusion.  Other people are fine with just naming their kid Jack.  It's like the Andrew/Drew argument.

Holyballs. The Jack I know is named Jack because his parents were French and wanted to use a more Americanized version of Jacques. This isn't uncommon; I'm not making this shitt up. I don't care where Jacques comes from, I'm saying Jack can be a standalone as a phonetic derivative of Jacques, just like the Scottish Jock.

Don't tell me no as if I'm making a mistake about the origin of the name as it's done in my husband's family. That would be like me saying no, I don't care what your family does, Jack is not a derivative of John. I wasn't trying to be a diick in my response to you, I was just casually mentioning that I do, in fact, know a very old Jack with the roots of the name. Do some research and stop being pretentious.
