Staple removal

About to have my staples removed on Monday...anyone had this happen?  Does it hurt??? I guess I shouldn't be that worried about the pain since i just went through labor and major abdominal surgery...but I am :)

Re: Staple removal

  • It didn't bother me at all. It just felt like very slight tugging. My sister told me hers felt a little painful but tickled at the same time. Sorta like when your foot falls asleep & you try to walk on it. So I guess everyone's experience is different!
  • They took mine out at 48 hrs when I was released. I was nervous but it just felt like a quick pinch on some of them. Others were like a tug.

  • Same as PPs - just a pinch/tug. Not a big deal.

I will confess, I had horrific images in my mind of how they would remove them - like, a staple remover like you use in an office. Ha. They have little pliers and they snip them.

I had mine removed 6days post C. They were starting to come out on their own b/c I was healing so quickly. I didn't feel a thing. the nurse popped them all out in less than a minute and I was on my way!

  • I had staples in my head from a car accident and didn't feel a thing when they removed them- I am pretty sure I will have to have a C section because baby girl is breech- they have this little pliers looking tool they use and bend the staple right in half. you hardly feel it!
  • OH! I was sooo nervous about having my staples removed too. I remember asking everyone if it was going to hurt. My OB said, "you were fully dialated, in active labor, and not feeling anything... and you're worried about staples!?" Haha. It really was so quick and not painful. Maybe a teeny pinch on one. It actually felt kind good, because your incision itches and having the staples removed seemed to help alleviate some of the itching.

  • I was terrified that it would hurt, I didn't feel most of them.  I didn't even know when he took the first one out.  That whole area will be numb for a long time, the nerves were cut so you shouldn't feel a thing.
  • LOVING all these answers, thanks!! Mine are starting to pop out as well and I was thinking that some of the pain down there seems like its more from being poked than the actual incision hurting!  My dr was out of town when I went into labor, so it was her on call dr that did the csection...she was so pissed when she found out he used staples! Ha!

It kind of worried me to. But I really didn't feel much (they took mine out at the hospital before we left). There was a slight sting (think small pinch) with a few but it wasn't that bad.

  • I had mine removed before I was discharged at 4 days postpartum. Most of mine were just a little tug but I'm not going to lie, a few of them hurt and caused my eyes to start to tear up. The pain went away quickly but in that moment it hurt.

  • when i had my staples removed, i didn't hurt at all (and i have a very, very low threshold for pain). you can feel when they pull it a little bit, but that's basically it.
