We've always closed the door to keep some of the noise from outside her room out (her first room was right outside the kitchen and bathroom so there was always a lot of noise). When she went to her toddler bed we kept it the same.
ETA: she went into a twin sized bed at 13 months because even though she hadn't had any successful escapes she kept getting very stuck in the slats to the point she had matching deep bruises on her thighs.

We put dd in a toddler bed about 3 months ago. dh made it for her and it was in her room for months then all of a sudden she wanted to lay on it so we tried it for 3 nights and she did great so we took down the crib. we shut her door bc if it was just a gate she would stand there and scream at us lol so we are still using the audio monitor
We moved DD at 22 months (she was climbing out of her crib). Initially we just shut the door. Then we discovered she's a sleepwalker and I did not want her roaming. We put a door knob cover on and that does stop her from roaming at night but she pops it right off no problem in the morning/during naptime, which is fine because I'm awake then. I imagine we'll take it off altogether as she potty trains.

I put Emerson in a big girl room the day she turned two because we needed the cribs. We baby proofed her room, put a safety bar on her bed so she wouldn't roll out and a baby gate on her door. We took the safe toys from her crib and put them all in her bed-even her FP aquarium. I was so scared. She never got out of the bed-ever.
Everything I read was to not go back in there and if they fell asleep on the floor, leave them there.
That being said, we going to leave the babies in their cribs until we have to put them in a twin bed. We are thinking around Christmas time when they are 2.5 years.

DD climbed out of her crib a week after she turned 2. I converted her crib to the toddler bed and have a baby gate in her doorway. We also have a gate at the top of the stairs in case she somehow got out of her room because DD is upstairs and our room is downstairs.
We took off the front of the crib at about 18 mos. so it was just a toddler bed with a rail. She never got out of it...which I know is not common. She just laid there playing with her stuffed animals and books until we came in to get her in the morning. We just moved her over to her big girl bed (a full size) this week and have had 3 great nights of her sleeping all night and not getting out until we come in to get her in the morning. Our thought was to get her out of the nursery before I was even pregnant to minimize stress on her. She LOVES being a big girl now. I, however, am sad.
14ish months? They were climbing out of their cribs. And the AAP recommends transitioning at 36 inches. They're pretty dang close to that, dang huge children!
They actually did okay with it. It took a day or two to really get it but they enjoy their beds now. We do gate off their area though. They are like Houdini otherwise.
We moved her over on her 2nd birthday. There was no reason to, but we were moving in a couple months temporarily and didn't want to bring the crib. We close the door and she's not tall enough to reach the handle. And for the first few months she wouldn't get out of bed by herself anyway.

I am so scared of when we have to make this transition. I feel like he'll never nap again.

Never.
She'll be sleeping beside me until she moves out.
Extreme attachment parenting.
...jk.
Probably after she weans I'll attempt the move. We'll bed share until then. She's so darn cuddly.
