when to switch from Neosure to regular formula?

We don't go back to the pediatrician until 4 mos (~18weeks old). She said at the 2 mo appt that DD could probably come off neosure at the 4 mo appt. DS was on it until our 2 mo appt too when he hit 50th percentile on the full term chart.

@ 1 mo-DS was 10th percentile on full term chart (50th on preterm)

then up to 50th at 2 months

@ 1 mo-DD was only 10th on preterm chart, but went up to 50th at the 2 mo check up, but still only 10th on full term chart @ 2 mos.

The last time they were weighed was 2.5wks after that 2 mo appt and DD had gained 26 ounces in 18 days. I hate having 2 babies on 2 different formulas. I'm wondering if it is worth scheduling an appt for weight checks to see if we can get DD off Neosure before the 4 mo appt.

What criteria did your doc use to switch to regular formula?

Thanks!

Re: when to switch from Neosure to regular formula?

  • It's never a problem to go in and do a weight check - you don't need the pedi, just call the office :) That said, follow your pedi's advice on when to switch. After you have the weights if you're still concerned ask the pedi to call you at home to discuss.

Ours went by consistent weight gain and after switching to EBF w/ no neosure she made sure he was still gaining.

  • Thanks for the info! The babies get some breastmilk too, so I have BM, enfamil and similac neosure in my fridge everyday! My kids are eating and growing great (luckily)! We went in for a vaccine on July 6 and my son was up to 13lbs 2.5oz & My daughter was 10lbs 11.5oz...we didn't see the doc at that appt, so I don't know what percentile they were in, but I'm guessing that my son is above 50th on the full term chart now!! I could see my daughter going from 10th to 50th percentile like my son did, so if she's in a healthy percentile, I'd love to get them back on the same formula.

Very curious to get their weights, but making an appt for weight checks if she doesn't get to come off neosure is so not worth the hassle of getting 2 babies in and out by myself!

  • The pedi, cardiologist & nicu follow-up clinic have all said my son will probably be on the neosure concentrated to 27 cal at least until a year. He is 15 weeks old (9 corrected) and was 7lbs 13ozs on monday. Im pretty sure it's different for all babies depending on their weight gain and their different situations. my son has been gaining about an oz a day since he came home from the nicu. He goes gor weight checks every other week. but every babu is different. because of his heart and how hard he has to work to eat he can only eat 2 to 2 & 1/2 ozs every 3 to 4 hours.
My little pumpkin was born at 34weeks, weighing 3lbs, due to severe IUGR & Unexplained Placental Insufficiency. He spent 49 days in the NICU. Lilypie Premature Baby tickers imageimageimageimageimageimage
  • At two months old our pedi took DD off Neosure, because she was gaining weight so well. I'm not sure their was a set weight that she had to gain, though. They really didn't tell me. You could also just call them and ask the doctor.

We were able to switch to regular formula right about her due date, so at 2 months old. She hadn't met any specific weight criteria, she was just gaining steadily on her own curve.

  • I switched DS and DD right after my due date so when they were about 7 weeks old. I had asked the pediatrician at their 1 month appointment and he said to keep them on at least until their due date. When I took them for their 2 month appointment and told him I had switched already he was fine with that. I don't think my pediatrician had any set weight they needed to be at but just that they were gaining consistently.
