Caffeine

Any coffee/soda drinkers trying to cut back or stop completely now that you're pregnant? What does your doctor recommend? I was a pretty big coffee drinker before but I'm trying my best to stop drinking caffeine. It is so hard though especially since I've been sleeping horribly lately, even though I'm exhausted. I'd kill for my afternoon iced coffee right about now...

Re: Caffeine

  • My Dr said to keep it under 200mg a day... I usually had a cup of coffee in the am and a diet dew with lunch, so far, I have given up the coffee. I like my Dt Dew too much to give it up! I believe one can of that is 55mg.

  • Most doctors and midwives say that a moderate amount of caffeine intake will not affect your pregnancy--200mg or below per day. That's easily one (maybe two depending on brand and brew) cups of coffee a day.

Caffeine has only been shown to cause spontaneous miscarriage in women who consume 5 cups or more per day of coffee or the equivilant.

I still brew about a cup a day, if I feel like I need it.

  • My doctor says 2 cups a day.  I'm a big soda drinker, and I've cut myself down to 1 a day (1.5 if I feel like I really need it).

I wouldn't kill yourself- have a small iced coffee :)

  • With DD1 I cut it completely, but this time I'm just trying to limit myself to two or three sodas a week. I don't drink coffee.

  • my doctor also said 2 or less cups a day.  I was only drinking about 1 cup of coffee a day before, and the occasional soda, so I haven't changed much.  I don't always finish the 1 cup, and sometimes I'll skip it altogether and have a soda with lunch.

  • I'm down to one Starbucks frap/Ice Blended Mocha a day.

Not a big pop drinker (and the ones I do drink are the 7 up variety).

  • 2 cups is fine, but if you're looking to cut back the best way I can suggest is to push off as long as you can with having a cup.

btw, I just poored a cup myself!  I have one in my commute into work and one at 3.  I also drink at least 80oz of water a day, so I'm not too concerned.

I can't seem to give it up without having headaches or really dragging, and I only drank about 2 sodas a day, no coffee!

I am trying to drink only one soda a day and keep it under 200 mg( which is much more than 1 soda! )  I have tried drinking ginger ale which is caffeine free, and it does help with nausea, but nothing helps more with nausea than a good old fashioned coke !

  • I've started brewing half caff. No problems yet!

  • I stupidly started drinking coffee this year. I never touched the stuff before then. Since my BFP I haven't had any coffee and I miss my lattes, lol. I do have a soda occasionally, if I am really dragging or have a headache. In fact, I'm thinking about going to get one now...

  • With DS i cut back, but didn't deprive myself.  I got super tired during the 1st tri with him and needed it to be able to function at work.  He was a pefectly health baby.

With this pregnancy, i'm trying to cut back as much as possible.  I've cut back to either a tiny cup of coffee in the AM, now i'm down to a soda in the PM.  Slowly getting there :)

  • I've tried to give caffine up completely.  BUT - I occasionally have a green tea or a tiny bit of chocolate.  Due to the exhaustion, I agree, I would love an Americano right now, but I struggle through the fatigue and sleep A LOT.

  • I'm still having 1-2 cups of coffee in the morning, and a diet coke or iced tea in the afternoon.  This is the same plan I had with DD.
  • I'm a caffeeine addict...funny thing is when I'm pregnant, my two faves, diet coke and coffee make me nauseous, so nature has helped me out there.  I am loving the iced tea now though.

  • I've cut it out and don't really miss it. I never drank more than a cup or a latte a day anyway. I'll definitely be having some decaf lattes here and there though. We have an expresso machine at home and I've actually been using some of our syrups in my water, since it's natural sugar. Just perks up my water a little :)
  • With my 1st I stopped completely until about 26 weeks when I read you could have under 200mg, so I started loading up on the diet coke.... needless to say I also started to load up on the water weight and was put on bed rest 5 weeks later. Before anyone SHOOTS me for my response let me say that I KNOW they aren't directly related, but the increase in "fake" sugar in the diet coke increased my craving for real sugar, decreased my water intake and my diet took a crash course. Two weeks flat on my back with tons of water, no caffeine, sugar or fatty foods I dropped 10 lbs of water weight and was back on track. Just like life, everything is ok in moderation. You know your body, if you have a question ask your doc or call your nurse. Their service is what you're paying for...

    Good luck and a HH9!

  • With DS, I cut out almost all caffeine- except for the occasional pop.  I plan on trying to do the same with this one, but am really missing my morning coffee!!  I'm sure this is ridiculous, and has no basis, but I just have it in my head that reducing the caffeine may make lessen the chances of baby being a super hyper child!  Just something that is probably silly, but stuck in my head!

  • Since I am a grad student, coffee being an addiction of mine is an understatement :)  I have been drinking half caff/ half decaf, with maybe one or two full caffeinated cups total since we found out we were pregnant 2 weeks ago.  In terms of soda, I have been drinking caffeine free Mt. Dew and Diet Coke as well as ginger ale and it satisfies that taste when I need it.

I am also drinking tons and tons of water, like more than I have ever drank in my life.  I will have a conversation with the midwife in 3 weeks when we go to see what she thinks and will adjust accordingly.

  • I dont drink coffee so no problem there.

I'm trying to limit to one diet coke a day but occasionally have two.

  • I won't give up my morning cup of coffee, but we've traded the french roast for a lighter roast and I've mixed in some flavored beans, which have even less caffeine.  I'm working towards brewing half caf pots.

I love diet coke, but am always trying not to drink it (even when I'm not pregnant) because it's straight chemicals.  I won't drink more than a can or two a week.

  • I drink instant coffee in the morning, always have (I prefer it)...I am now mixing it half and half with decaf.  I've barely noticed the difference actually, which is great.  :)
