I found out last week that I am about 5 weeks along in my first pregnancy. We are VERY excited and want to do everything right, but I'm having an issue with conflicting information from different doctos and OBs. I'm on vyvanse for ADD and am on the last leg of testing for my CPA license. I take my last test at the end of August. It is an INCREDIBLY hard test and I can barely read a sentance and retain it if I'm not on my meds.
My OB friend from out of town said to get off Vyvanse (similar to adderal) ASAP - it's a scedule C, it hasn't been tested... blah blah. But when I called my OB, he said that adderal was okay and that I could take it - especially if I need it to pass my test.
I know the first trimester is the MOST important and has the highest risk of MC (which terrifies me), so I want to do everything the right way, but I also want to make sure that I can pass my test and have the best career possible when our baby comes. What am I supposed to do when doctors tell me different info?!
Re: Conflicting OB/GYN info on Adderal/Vyvanse? HELP!
Adderall and Vyvanse may be similar but they are not the same.
Tylenol is safe to take while pregnant. Excedrin is not. They treat the same conditions but chemically are not the same.
You need to ask your OB about taking Vyvanse while pregnant because that is what you are taking not adderall.
ETA: On the ADHD site it lists adderallas a Class C as well. It states that adderall was tested on rodants and caused long term brain damage and vyvanse was not tested but similar chemical compounds have an increased risk of miscarriage. If your OB is still saying its okay while the FDA is saying it isn't I would get a second opinion.
2 years, 2 surgeries, 2 clomid fails, 2 IUIs, 1 loss, IVF #1 - 10/25/10 = BFP!, DS is now 3.5yrs!
TTC #2 - 6/12 surgery #3, FET #1 & 1.2 = BFN, 12/2012 FET #2 = BFP! DD is 1.5 yrs!
Surprise! 12/16/14 BFP, loss #2 12/31/14
I can't wait for the "im getting a divorce" post in 5 years or so because your husbands were fed up with your disgusting chair asses from playing on the knot all day and getting fired 4-5 times for not doing any work. you guys are all winners!! ~ Laur929
I have to agree. I've numerous times had to call pharmacists about a drug because our doctors didn't know everything about it.
I am with L&R70707
I am ADHD and was on Ritalin AND am a law student. So when the decision came to baby v. ability to focus, I picked the former. It took us 4 months to conceive ... a very long 4 months without my meds (OK maybe I took a few pills here and there) But I definitely agree that you should get off of them. Its not only a risk of miscarriage we are talking about here. Before I stated trying, I found what little information I could on the internet about these stimulating drugs and pregnancy and it turns out that stimulants can lead to malformations of the organs, especially the heart.
I understand your delima. However, maybe you can try and quit cold turkey and take the test. And if you fail, you can always take it again and the time between tests will give u time to learn how to focus better without the pills (trust me, life IS doable without the pills . . . just get them out of your system and start living incrementally healthier -- as in getting more sleep and eating better food and exercising more -- and its not that bad).
I know you probably feel immense pressure with the impending test, but you have got to take a breath and realize its not the end of the world. What matters most to you? What REALLY matter most?
i was previously on adderall and topamax prior to getting pregnant. Two doctors (obgyn) and my psychiatrist told me to stop using everything and there are no safe substitutions.
Its very frustrating! But I want a healthy baby!
Thanks for your reply - i wish that i COULD take the test again! with the CPA exam, you have to pass all 4 parts in 18 months. If I don't pass this part this time, I have to retake all of them because the ones i've passed will start to expire! I'm only a month away from being done, so it's incredibly hard to imagine trying to study 2,000 pages of accounting (not exaggerating!) for a 5 hour test! this has been 2 years in the making and i really want to be done.
I'm calling a different OB to get a second opinion - if I'm told that it's okay for the next few weeks, then i'll do it, if not, the baby is worth how ever many times i have to take this test! i've seen a few posts on here about welbutrin instead or a non-stimulant option...
the only thing that i keep thinking about is that i found out so early - what if i didn't find out until 8 weeks? would my baby have birth defects from something I didn't even know i was doing wrong? I would have kept doing everything like i used to before i got that second pink line without even thinking about it. (couples TTC are my idols for health!). If taking the medication and doing other things that aren't condusive to conception and baby development don't hurt before you find out (i've read what to expect when youre expecting and they say "don't worry about the past"), how much difference would 3 or 4 weeks make on the medicine?
I also find the arguments about the animal testing a little wierd - they said that for vyvance, malformations in rat offspring were shown when the mother was given 20X the equivalent human dose. Up to that point - no issues. So I'm not trying to take 1,000 mg of it a day! basically they don't know bc who would really volunteer for that kind of study!?
i'm not trying to justify doing anything that would jeopardize my pregnancy at all! i just wonder if its so bad for you PERIOD, why even prescribe it?!
They say "Don't worry about the past" because you can't change it not because not knowing you were pregnant makes the harmful side effects not happen.
It is possible, which is why it is a good idea to discuss medications like this with your doctor before trying to get pregnant, so you can stop well in advance. As far as 3 or 4 weeks...the difference can be huge depending on what organs are developing when...the end of 1st tri, for example, is a critical point in nuerological development.

I spoke to a second OB yesterday and he said that he has no problem at all with me being on adderall. He said he's got plenty of patients on it who have had perfectly happy and healthy babies with no problems. One analogy he used was "you wouldn't ask a diabetic to stop taking insulin!" if you can't function without the meds, don't stop taking them. and as long as you are under the watch of your OB, everything should be fine.
there's no research to show one way or the other except the doctor's experience - anything nowadays can cause miscarriages, so i don't think it would be fair to blame one on this medication - if you can get off the meds and still function and not get fired from your job, that's great! but some people really need the help to get by!
I'm sorry but that is the most flawed analogy I have every heard. Insulin and it's affects on pregnancy have been studied (in humans) by the FDA, adderall and vyvanse have not. Also, if a diabetic does not have their insulin they will die. Their orgains will shut down. If you don't have your adderall, your life may be a living hell but not taking that medicine will not kill you.
