Babies: 9 - 12 Months

10 months old, not moving...at all. ?

I've not posted on this board before, so thank you in advance.  DD turned 10 months today.  She is not crawling, scooting, pulling up, cruising, or well, just about anything.  She sits like a champ though!  She can roll (as evidenced any time I put her on her belly, which she hates).

Pedi isn't concerned until one year.  Neurosurgeon we saw today for her helmet isn't concerned.  But his PA was, and asked us if we had her in physical therapy.

I should add that DD is almost 25 lbs, so a little chunker.  Pedi says that's an awful lot of weight to move. (But not concerned about her weight, if that makes any sense).

What more can I be doing?

  • My son is over 20 lb as well and just started crawling a few days ago at 10.5 months. I wouldn't be worried, especially if your doctor isn't concerned! I would get her outside lots and give her lots of opportunity to start moving (tummy time). My doctor told me that the heavier babies often take their time starting to move. That being said if you are concerned, it never hurts to get a second opinion!

My DD just started army crawling a couple days ago.  She does not pull to sit or stand.  She cannot even stand up even while holding on to the ottoman for more than 2 seconds  In fact she didn't roll over until she was 6 months old or sit on her own without tipping over until 8 months. Some kids are slower than others.   If your pedi isn't concerned then try not to worry about it.

  • Everyone says that each baby develops differently.  My daughter is 10 months and she is also 25 lbs (yay for chunky babies!  LOL!) and She army crawls, she sits from a crawling position and crawls from a sitting position, shes just now trying to pull herself up, but it's so half hearted.  She pulls on the furniture and makes a sound like she's trying sooo hard but she's barely doing anything!  It's funny!  I think it's true that its a lot of weight for a little one to move around!
But...I had a situation when dd was 6 months where our ped noticed the folds in her legs didn't match up, and she sent us for xrays which came back fine.  Last week at her 10 month appt she decided she wants to send us to a specialist to make sure her hips are okay.  I'm telling you this because 4 months ago I wanted to take her to a specialist and everyone told me not to worry,  That the xrays came back fine and I was over reacting.  Now I wish I would have taken her then and ignored everyone else!  Now that she should be walking in a few months, I can't help but feel like this could have been corrected several months ago.
My point...go with your gut.  at least, if anything you know she's fine!!!  And if there is something wrong, you will be glad you didn't wait.
    Good Luck!!!  Keep us posted!!!
  • I've heard of kids completely skipping any type of crawling and just started walking.  My friend's DD is on the chunkier side too and it took her a while to start crawling as well.

  • My LO is (was) a little chunker too - she's started to thin out now that is finally is moving.  At any rate, she was about 22 lbs around the 10 month mark and has leveled off at that for the most part.  It wasn't until after the 11 month mark that she decided to scoot on her tush.  She now CRUISES all over the place that way - we've nicknamed her Scooter.  She also HATED tummy time and only rolled once or twice.  I didn't realize until after her scooting started that DH and his brother were both scooters as well.  Have her evaluated if it would make you feel better, I just decided to wait it out until her 1 year appointment if nothing got any better.  My pedi wasn't concerned and I was pretty nervous about it since DD#1 started crawling at 9 months and was walking/cruising at 10.5 months and walking the same week as her 1st birthday.  They are all so different.

  • Just had to give another shout out to chunky babies!  DD is 21.6 lbs @ 10 months.  We are surrounded by little babies, so it always makes me feel better to know she is not alone.  Wink
  • I can tell you from our experience what we chose to do, our LO is 11 months (today yay!) and about 3 weeks ago he wasn't crawling, cruising, pulling to stand, similar to your LO. I had been concerned for a few months but was assured by everyone that all babies develop differently and not to worry, well I finally convinced hubby to call EI and have him evaluated. I am of course worried that there may be something wrong but feel so much better that someone will be coming out to evaluate him. They will be out in the beginning of August. Having said that in the past two weeks, he has begun to really start to move and I'm seeing drastic changes in his motor development, his cognitive skills are still behind, but he is now army crawling, he can get from lying down to sitting on his own, (just started yesterday) and he pulled himself to stand twice. I am a worrier by nature and so I generally tend to be a bit drastic but I'm a big believer in doing what you feel in your gut. I'm sure your LO is fine but if you're concerned it can never hurt to ask someone such as your local EI office

  • what got my chunky man moving was putting my ice coffee on the floor! he liked the noise of the ice and the straw, Have you tried putting her favorite a little bit out of reach?  As hard as it is don't help let her get the toy herself. like pp your lo may skip crawling altogether. gl:D

  • DS isn't chunky and started to crawl around 8 1/2 months, BUT, he really hated tummy time and didn't roll over or even push himself up off the ground with his arms for a long time.

We decided to take him to an infant chiropractor who took one look at him and said, "oh his shoulder is stuck!"  It looked the same as the other one to me, but I'm no expert.  She did an adjustment (with a clicker), put him on his belly on the table, and he pushed himself up for the first time like he'd been doing it for months.  Crawling followed soon after.

I know chiropractic care for infants may be something people feel is silly, but it worked for DS.  I honestly have no idea when he would have started to crawl if we hadn't gone to her, and we haven't needed to go back since.

    Just something to think about.

Also, the average age for crawling is 7-10 months, which means there are plenty of babies who crawl past 10 months.  I know it's frustrating to watch other babies hit milestones and want your LO to also, but hang in there.  As a friend of mine with 6 kids said to me, "They all walk."

    :-)

  • Crawling isn't actually considered a milestone. My older son never crawled, he went straight to walking around a year.

  • I wouldn't be worried! A baby I know wasn't crawling at a year (! a year!) but then went from a little crawling to walking within a month or two. Kiddos get to milestones on their own time. As long as your pedi isn't worried I think you're fine! Enjoy that little one.

At our 9 month checkup my son wasn't doing anything but sitting there.  Dr said if by 10 months or so nothing had really changed to maybe see a physical therapist.  She wasn't worried about him but just thought if he was developing slow to get him some help sooner rather than later.  Not crwaling alone is not a big deal she said but doing nothing put him behind.  But overall it's not a big deal and it doesn't mean there is something wrong...she will walk one day :)

  • My son was the same way at 10-11 months.  Although my pediatrician really wasn't concerned, I asked for a referral and ended up taking him to physical therapy for an evaluation.  The therapist really scared me- telling me he had low muscle tone, that his gross motor skills were like those of a 6 month-old and that he needed 6+ months of treatment.  I was really worried (to say the least), so that night I watched him closely, sitting on the floor of his bedroom with him playing, etc.  That very night, he started scooting.  It was the strangest thing, timing wise.  He even scooted over to a bookcase and tried (unsuccessfully) to pull up- something he had never even attempted.  Even though scooting isn't the ideal movement, at least it's something!  I think, for my son, a lot of this has to do with confidence.  He feels very safe in his room and certainly moves and makes the most effort to try new things in there.  You may want to try spending some time in your daughter's room or other place where she feels the most secure.  We haven't yet started the PT treatments, but I plan to try them.  I figure it can't hurt.  Even after the evaluation, our pediatrician is still not worried and even suggested that treatment probably isn't necessary.  I'm a worrier though, so I'm doing all I can.  If PT is accessible to you, it won't hurt, but I'd wait a month and try to take their evaluation with a grain of salt.
