Preemies

holding baby

I just need to vent! Went to a family function and my friend gave me a break from my son so I could go eat. I come back 5minutes later and my friend is letting her mom and two young children hold my 3month preemie, and was taking pictures of all these people holding him. I didnt say anything, just kept to myself. But I was like what the heck are you doing?! My baby doesnt need to get sick and he isnt yours to pass around. errr...people make me mad. I want to know how you handle these situations. I just get frustrated because people think just because he is home from the NICU he is a normal baby. On top of everything they didnt even wash their freakin hands :(

Re: holding baby

  • This is a pretty easy fix: strict instructions. Or, just wear your baby so holding isn't an option and you have two hands to eat. Or, one of those "please don't touch" signs if LO is in a carseat. People like to pass babies...
  • We didn't go anywhere at 3 months and we were pretty clear with family and friends what was acceptable and what wasn't. If they didn't respect it then no visits etc. Ditto the PP about baby wearing, etc. If you don't speak up, someone may not know.

  • We were at my in-laws and there was family and friends over.  My husband let a family friend hold him (which I was a little leery about but she was right in front of me) and then I turned around for a minute and heard her say "let's go outside and pass the baby around!"  I quickly stopped her and explained that I didn't mind that she was holding him, but that I didn't want to play "pass the baby" because he is a preemie and our doctor reccomended limited interaction.  I think she was a little taken aback that I spoke up, but apalogized and ended up handing him back to me.  I think when you are in that situation again, you should speak up and ask that he not be passed around, for his health.
