3rd Trimester

Has anyone had a successful External cephalic version (ECV)??

Hi ladies, so I found out yesterday that baby is breech. After confirming with my dr today she suggested trying an ECV on Wednesday to try to flip baby around. Have any of you ladies had any experience with this. I really don't want to have a c section and I want baby to flip on her own if possible! My dr said that the chance of her flipping on her own now is very slim. Any advice is greatly appreciated.

Re: Has anyone had a successful External cephalic version (ECV)??

  • Me, I had one last week at 36 weeks 5 days.  It worked and really was not that painful at all and took less than a minute.  It was worth it for me vs. major surgery in a c-section.  I was a good candidate because I had a previous vaginal birth, good amniotic fluid and the baby hasn't dropped yet.

I will say that I'm super paranoid it flipped back to breech but I don't think it has...I will find out tomorrow at my appt but I'm told if it works, the chances of it flipping breech again are slim.  Good luck!

Thanks for the feedback! I'm a FTM but my dr said I have a good chance because baby hasn't settled into my pelvis. I'm happy to hear tat it wasn't tht painful. I'm a little nervous about it.

Others who have had this done, is that a normal amount of time?  My LO is also breech and for some reason they're already expecting that he won't turn.  I'm nervous about the version, but knowing it can be that quick puts me at ease a little!

  • If you do end up having it please post your experience and the results.  I have my 36 week apt tomorrow and will have an u/s.  Baby has been either transverse or breech the whole time so we might try the version next week (at 37 weeks).  I had a vaginal birth with DS and also really want to avoid a c-section...

We tried a version at 36w6d and were not succesful. I am a FTM but had everything else in my favor, small baby, enough fluid, not in pelvis, but still didn't work. The docs tried twice and we had to stop during the second turn becuase the baby dropped its heart rate. They offered to try again, but I declined. I did think the procedure was painful, but they were pushing very hard as the baby wouldn't budge. They offer epidurals fo versions at my hospital.

  • I opted to not have an ECV. Both my first 2 were breech and they were both head up, feet down. It's a hard position to turn because the feet were already in my pelvic area.

Anyway, at my hospital, and ECV is done by 2 OB's, you are strapped to an u/s machine AND given an epidural beforehand. After the procedure, you need to be monitored for an additional 6 hours. It's not a 1 minute procedure at my hospital.

They gave me a 35% chance that they could be successful with my ECV because my abdomen was tight and I was carrying small, and the position of the baby. I decided not to go for it.

GL to you whatever you decide!
