Bed Rail

When did you take the bed rail off the bed for your little one?  DD is 3 and I'm wondering if she still needs it.

Re: Bed Rail

  • DD moved into her big girl bed a few months after turning 2.  She just turned 4 and still uses it.  I know she would be fine without it.  Every time I check on her she is never even close to the rail.  However, she wants it up still.  I ask her every few months and she keeps saying she doesn't want me to get rid of it, so I am leaving it up and not pushing the issue.

  • DS just asked for his to be taken down recently--within the last few weeks.  I wasn't sure that he was ready, as he still moves a ton at night, but he hasn't fallen out yet.

  • My girls moved to their twin beds on the floor at 18 months (DD#1) and 17 months (DD#2).  I used the bedrail the whole time it was on the floor (until around 2 1/2) when we added the box spring and then kept it on for another 5 or so months so I am guessing that at around age 3 give or take.  It really depends on your child - does your child move a lot at night, sleep really close to the age?  If yes to either, I would keep it on longer.

  • We removed them somewhere 3-3.5 when DS said he was ok taking them off. He's fallen out of bed 3 or 4 times since we removed them but it hasn't been a big deal. He's cried a couple of times or just sat there yelling "mom, I fell out of bed". I go put him back in bed, pat his back a few times then say goodnight & he goes right back to sleep. We have carpet in his bedroom & I keep a king size pillow stuffed between his bed & the nightstand so he doesn't that. If it was a hard floor I'm sure I'd be more concerned.

  • We never used one.  We switched DD to her low toddler bed around 2/2.5 and we couldn't find the matching rail we'd bought to go w/ the crib 2 years before (argh!) so I just rolled up some towels and stuck them under the fitted sheet and did that for about 2 weeks.  She's never falled out of the bed or even come close.  If she were in a big bed, higher up, I still probably wouldn't use them, but I'd roll the towles again just to remind her to feel for the edge.
