Baby Names

Jackson vs. Jaxson?

We are set on naming our son Jackson/ Jaxson. Our dilemma is which spelling to go with. DH and I have agreed that we don't really want his nickname to be Jack, we prefer Jax. I think I prefer the more traditional spelling of Jackson, but think that will lead to his nickname being Jack. Or do you think that if we call him Jax at home, when he starts school and stuff Jax will stick and he won't be called Jack?

  • I think Jaxson looks kind of trashy. Just name him Jackson and call him Jax.

  • It's nms, but I think you can do the nn Jax with the spelling Jackson (I wouldn't do Jaxson). It will likely stick at school, but just know that he will eventually choose the name he wants to go by and that could be Jack. I don't see Jax aging well.

Very iffy name/spelling around here! Haha, this board loves to hate X's in names when they don't "belong". But I personally adore Jackson, I don't care how popular it is. I however MUCH prefer the traditional spelling of Jackson to Jaxson. If you call him Jax, so will everyone else.

  • I think Jackson is a nicer spelling.

There's probably no way to know what will happen in school; they won't really know you call him Jax at home unless he tells them and reminds them. Also, he may like Jack better as a NN once he's in school and old enough to have an opinion, who knows!

  • Jackson, for sure. The Jaxson spelling doesn't even make sense-- the S is redundant, since the X includes the S sound. Jaxon at least makes sense, but it looks like a misguided attempt to make Jackson edgier and unique. The NN does not depend on the spelling, so using Jax would be fine. I really don't think that Jackson would default to Jack. It's a short enough name and people would be presumptive to shorten it to a totally different name without being instructed to.

Well, let's see...one is completely misspelled.  If that's the look you're going for, (and the name would then be pronounced Jacks-son), then go for it.

Oh and he's going to be teased to no end..."hahaha---he JAX OFF all the time!!!"

  • DS1 is named Jackson with the nn Jax. It's a great name and has a classic feel to it, whereas Jaxson screams the 2010's. I HATE this spelling. DS has been called Jack maybe two or three times in his life, to which we correct them. No biggie. To respond to the PP's comment above, I really don't think Jax is any more ripe for teasing than Sabrina potentially being called "Sapenis." Kids can find a way to butcher any name. My guess is that DS will go as just Jackson when he's an adult. No different than most formal names with cutesy nn's.

  • What does "Sapenis" mean?  I mean, it doesn't rhyme with her name, and it doesn't mean anything.  JAX sounds like a word used for masturbation. Sure, kids will make fun of any name, but some are more ripe for it than others.  I think you were reaching with "Sapenis".

Sure, I WAS reaching. Brina = Pena = Pen1s. It's the first thing that came to mind and took me all of 5 seconds to think of it. That's precisely my point. Kids are mean and will find a way to tease any child's name if they so desire. Like my BFF growing up was named Robin and we called her Bean Pole b/c "bin" sounds a teeny bit like "bean."

ETA: Oh, and FWIW, I don't doubt that Jax could be interchanged with "jacks off." But no more so than any boy named Jack and that's been a plenty popular name for generations. The possibility wouldn't be enough to convince me to go with another name.

I'm sincerely sorry if you feel like I attacked you. That really wasn't my intention. I was just trying to prove a point. Maybe I went too far. I do think your original comment that "he'll be teased to no end" was obnoxious, though. If you would've said "he MIGHT be teased," I wouldn't have felt as defensive. But, no, you made it sound like teasing was an absolute. That's a pretty ridiculous and bold statement.

NICE EDIT.  You should've stuck with your original apology.  Again, I wasn't even talking to you.

There have been plenty of people that have told posters that if their kids initials spell "BJ", they're going to be teased.  Don't see how that's any different.  You're just taking offense at something that wasn't even directed at you. In this post alone, there are people who have said what a terrible name it is, but for some reason you pick on MY post?  I wasn't even the first to make the "jax off" reference.  I'm sorry the semantics of my assessment is what is offending you.  Talk about ridiculous.Confused

  • Your son will become an adult, and I would recommend doing that adult a big favor and not saddle him with Jaxson.   Jackson is a strong, good name.  Crazy popular right now, but it will age well.  Throwing an 'x' in just makes it trendy, and kind of silly.

  • Wow I did not expect this to cause such a controversy. I appreciate everyone's reponse. I knew prior to writing this post that Jackson was not a popular name on this board. This post was not going to change my name choose no matter what anyone said. I love the name and honestly don't know anyone who has named their child Jackson.

  • There is no contest. Jackson. If he likes the NN Jax it will follow at school. My mom called me Crissy at home but it didn't follow me to school because I didn't want other people to call me that.
