Bad luck names

My DH and I started to talk about names, even though it's early. We have our boy name picked out, but our top girl names have turned out to have something bad linked to them. We both love Mallory, but the meaning is "bad luck" or "bad omen." We like Avery/Averie too, with the middle name being Grace, and I prefer the spelling Averie. When I typed Averie Grace into google, just for fun, I found that it's the name of a little girl that was kidnapped and never found, apparently a pretty well known case. I'm really not that superstitious, but just wondering- would you ever name your LO a name with something negative linked to it??

Re: Bad luck names

  • Although I do like the name Mallory, I have to admit knowing the meaning behind the name would freak me out. I can't believe that's what it means! I should say, as we have been researching baby names (even family names) I take the "meaning" into consideration.

On another note, I also love Averie Grace (Grace was my grandmother's name and I definitely want to use it as a middle name). I don't think the ill fate of another girl with the same name would affect my decision to use that name.

  • My top boy name was Cormac until someone on the Baby Names board told me it means "son of desicration."  Bummer.

I wouldn't let the Avery thing bother you.  I'd never heard that association.

  • I wouldn't let Averie Grace bother you but I do know what you mean. Being a teacher as well, many many names have been ruined. You also see how popular names are when working in a school. We have so many kids with the same names!

  • I don't think you should let news stories like that affect your decision.  After all, there's no way to predict what names will end up being future news stories.  I met a kid once named Justin Bieker (no kidding; ONE letter off) and I'm pretty sure when he was born his parents had no idea that there'd one day be someone famous named Justin Bieber. It's all just a crapshoot anyway so go with what you like!

I love name Mallory. In French it means beautiful. But I have also seen it listed as unlucky, or warrior in German. I think its classic sophisticated and beautiful. Also Maori history is very interesting to me and it originated from Polynesian people who settled in new Zealand and Australia.

    Ha! That's great!

Seriously though... I wouldn't let either bother me. They are both great names. If our names actually predicted anything I would name #2- calm sweet child that sleeps well :)

  • I love knowing the meaning behind names. I like the French and German versions of Mallory the best ;)

Don't let the Averie Grace thing bother you. Association can be annoying if it was someone you know that leaves you a bad taste in your mouth, but if it's someone you don't know, I say go for it. Both names are super sweet :)

I think naming our LO is going to be the hardest thing about my pregnancy. DH is a high school teacher, so of course tons of names are out for him. He did mention a couple girl names the other day that he likes that weren't too bad, but neither struck a huge chord with me either. We shall see!

  • I'm with some of you other PP's. Being a teacher completely ruins names for you! I will never be able to name my kids Connor, Danielle, or Taryn. Not that I was particularly drawn to those names, but they are for sure no-gos.

  • With #1, we really liked Teagan for a girl...until I googled it and the first thing that came up was a porn star! So yeah, random associations can kill a name. Mary is a family name that we thought about using until I looked up the meaning- "bitter". No thanks. I had to do several "What does your name mean?" projects growing up, so I don't want to give my kid a name s/he would be bummed to present to the class.
