How do you ladies feel about foods like bacon and pepperoni? My doctor told me to avoid them but I have to admit I've had a little from time to time because I've been CRAVING them. A lot of people I speak to say it's fine.
Any thoughts??
P.S. Finally in week 13 today!!! Super excited ![]()
Re: Bacon?
It's the nitrates that aren't good for you and that's true pregnant or not. We buy uncured or nitrate free bacon. I don't worry about pepperoni because it's not something we eat all that often.
I wouldn't worry about avoiding either completely, but if you're going to eat a lot of it it's probably a good idea to go for the nitrate free in general.

This! I had bacon and eggs for breakfast and bacon on my cheeseburger for dinner tonight.
I read your subject line and thought, "Bacon? Yes, please!"
I don't eat it everyday, but when I want it, I'll definitely get me some : )

BLTs have been a big craving of mine, and I've actually been eating them as my bedtime snack for a few days now. I figure it's a good way to get protein (good late a night to prevent morning sickness) and I'm getting some veggies too! But it's not every meal, and it's better than not being able to eat anything.
Cravings signal that your body needs something.
I agree with this! And either way everything is better in moderation!
I'm avoiding it. In the Dr. Oz pregnancy book he says foods like bacon and pepperoni which are processed meats have a lot of nitrates in them and unwind DNA that isn't supposed to be unwound.
I figure better safe than sorry. I do miss my bacon and hot dogs, but it's only for 9 months and it's probably healthy for me to take a break from it too.

Team Bacon. My doctors have not mentioned anything about avoiding it. I'm with most of the PPs... everything in moderation.
It's pretty easy to find nitrate free or uncured versions of pretty much anything including bacon, deli meat, hot dogs, etc. Just FYI
But that stuff still isn't exactly the healthiest for you so if you're still wanting to avoid then by all means!

This is the first time I've ever heard about avoiding bacon & pepperoni. Weird.
That being said, of course I'm not avoiding it, and I still won't avoid it,
