Sleeping question

Hello. My DS was born at 34w4d due to PROM. He spent 11 days in the NICU due to jaundice and difficulty gaining weight in the beginning. He is now one week adjusted.

He remains pretty sleepy throughout the day. He does wake himself to eat, but pretty much eats and goes back to sleep. He also falls asleep frequently during feedings.  He will sometimes have wakeful periods of an hour or so, maybe once a day. Does this sound "normal" for his adjusted age?

Sorry if this is a stupid question. I guess it has just gotten to me that my family always says "he's 6 weeks old, he shouldn't be sleeping this much!". I have to remind them that he should have just been born.

Thanks for your help.

Re: Sleeping question

  • I think that the schedule sounds right.  My LO didn't really have extended "play times" until he was about 2-3 weeks (adjusted age).  Although my pedi also said not to allow him to sleep longer than 5 1/2 hrs without eating.  Good luck.

  • Totally normal.  I've been told to expect them to behave at their adjusted age, anything before that is bonus.  Your son is essentially a newborn and newborns sleep a lot.

  • DD2 was born at 35w and she was a sleepy baby for quite a while- at least until her due date. It sounds totally normal to me.

  • Sounds normal.  DD was born 4 weeks early and that was her "schedule" for a long time.

  • Thank you all for your reassurance. I hate when he is constantly compared to full term babies of the same age. It always makes me second guess everything.

    I really appreciate your responses.
