Uncommon Hebrew/Biblical girl names

Hi ladies,

I usually just lurk here, obsessing over possible names for future babies, but I thought I'd enlist some of your expertise! A friend of mine is pregnant with DD#3 and is having a hard time coming up with a name she loves. Her DS and DD1 & 2 all have unusual (but not yooneek) hebrew names. Any ideas? TIA :)

Re: Uncommon Hebrew/Biblical girl names

  • Mine is faith, from Hebrews 11.

  • I'm not sure if all of these are strictly Hebrew, but these female names are all Biblical and relatively uncommon nowadays:

    Esther

    Sarai

    Ruth

    Claudia

    Susanna

    Joanna

    Eve

    Magdalene/Magdalena

Delilah (kind of a weird choice if the parents are religious, but it's a beautiful name)

    ETA: added a name :)

  • My faves are Basia, Elisheva, Noa, Shoshana, Talia and Yosefa. The last one is especially on trend these days... it's Hebrew for Josephine.

ETA: I took your OP to mean you're looking for actual Hebrew names, not anglo names with Hebrew roots. Still, I like these names a whole lot... so take them for what they're worth.

  • Hi have some orthodox (Jewish) cousins and their names are Ari, Aviva, Shoshana (someone already mentioned), and Hillel.

LOL I third Shoshana cause it's my nieces Hebrew name!

Thanks for the suggestions, everyone. Please keep them coming :)
  • I love Shoshana and Hadassah (became Queen Esther).  I also like Jochebed, mother of Moses.

  • Two weird ones I would totally use if DH hadn't vetoed:

Havilah : Not precisely a name, but a place named in Genesis that's been used as a name historically.

Talitha : It means "young girl" in Aramaic (there's a section in the Gospels when Jesus heals a girl and uses the word), but I've always liked it as a name.

  • I second Aviva! That's one of my favorite girl names.

  • I adore Aviva but its too matcha with my last name. My DDs middle name is Liat which means you are mine. We love it!
  • LOVE Tziporah

  • One of my best friend's names is Salome. She's actually African, and the tradition is to do an African first name and Biblical middle name, but she goes by Salome in the US. I absolutely love it.
  • The only one I can think of that has yet to be mentioned is Tikvah.
