how many ounces does your 6 week old eat per feeding

My LO is 6 weeks and takes about 3 ounces. Im not sure what he gets at night because I breastfeed. He nurses every 2 hours still...I was curious about other 6 week olds.

  • At week 5 they were up to 3.5, they went back to 3 for a few days and now are at 3.5 again.

Also, we have been feeding till they stop before bed and found that before sleeping they will eat up to 6 ozs and then sleep for a few more hours without waking up.  Then it seems they aren't as hungry when they do wake up and go back to sleep much easier.

  • I EP. DS drinks 4 oz every 3 to 4 hours but it takes an hour on average to finish the bottle. I don't let him just suck it down. So let's say he wakes up from a nap at 1 pm, he will eat on and off 3 oz until 2 pm. Then we "play" or he helps me as I pick up the house. He starts to fall back to sleep around 3 or 3:30 pm at which time I love him the last oz. At night he is awake usually from like 6 to 10 and cluster feeds so in the span of that 4 hours sometimes is as much as 7 because he's awake the whole time. He'll take his normal bottle from 6-7 pm then want an oz or two between 9-10. He's only up once during the night and again usually around 7 am. He's not on a rigid schedule so the times are just relative but usually pretty close to what our day and oz look like.
  • She usually eats 3 oz every 2 hours, although occasionally she'll eat 2 or 4.  She'll go 5-6 hours overnight too.

  • During the day, she usually averages about 4 oz every 3 hours.  She is a leisurely eater, with each feed taking about 45 mins up to an hour. After her 6:00 or 7:00pm feeding, she usually sleeps until about 12:30 or 1:00 am.  She then takes another bottle of about 4 oz and sleeps until 6:00 am.

  • I think we finally got my LO on the right formula - Alimentum.  Its helping her with her colic. She now eats anywhere from 2.5 - 3.5 ounces every 2-3 hours.  Seems like from 4am until the mid-afternoon its every 2 hours and then moves to every 3 hours.  At night she takes a bottle between 7p-9p and takes about 3oz.  Sleeps for 3-4 hours and takes another 3oz.  Then sleeps again for 3 hours or so.  Then its every 2 hours and so on.

Glad to see that other's LOs are eating every 2 hours too.  Every 2 hours is tough to keep up with but I am getting used to it.

  • my little girl is 5 weeks old, formula fed. She takes 4 ounces every 3 hours. Sometimes she will only take 3 ounces but sometimes she will go for 5 ounces. I think it depends on how long she has napped/ slept.
  • We formula feed, and Finn usually takes 3-4 oz every 2-3 hours during the day. Before he goes to sleep at night he usually eats 6 oz, and then he'll sleep up to 7 hours straight.

  • I read on KellyMom that EBF babies from birth to 6 months should take in about 25oz of breastmilk per day.  I was weighing DS before and after feedings a couple of weeks ago and he was taking in 2.5oz each feeding, and was eating 10-12 times per day, for a total of about 25-30oz, which was where he should've been.

He seems to be eating more per feeding with fewer feedings now, but I bet he's still at about the same oz/day.
