Forgive me in advance for venting. I told a friend today that I planned to name my baby Vanessa and she reacted so badly. She basically said that Vanessa makes her think of some stuck up girl who went to high school with her and that it's a name that will ensure my daughter will be a stuck up princess. She also said that it sounds too long for a baby and it's very 80s. And all this is coming from someone who named ther daughter Sophia. I don't think Vanessa is that far off from Sophia aside from the popularity factor. She totally crushed my enthusiasm and I am totally second guessing myself now. Help
Re: Some people!
I was almost named Vanessa. I think it is a great name. Ignore her.
We didn't share the name for our DS with anyone until his birth. I was afraid of negative reactions like the one you got.

This is exactly why we are keeping names to ourselves. I don't care about other people's opinions, but I wouldnt be able to blow them off either.
Sounds like your friend was being a biitch.
I love the name Vanessa, I think it's beautiful.
Sorry she said that, but don't let it get to you. People like to have opinions on everything especially names.
Vanessa is not for me, but it's a great pick. I quite like it. I work with a girl who's daughter is Vanessa and she's adorable so I have a good associaton.
Did you tell her Vanessa and Sophia have the same # of syllables and only one more letter? How is that REALLY any longer? Not that it really matters, but Sophia sounds just as "stuck up princess" to me as Vanessa. Unless you raise her as a stuck up princess, I think you'll be fine.
Vanessa sounds lovely. Congratulations :]
