Graco Nautilus - LATCH in booster mode?

We're switching DD's (6 yo) Nautilus over from a harness to high back booster mode. The manual says to only use the seat belt (and not the LATCH) to secure the seat, but I've read online that Graco has changed this and that they now say you can use the LATCH and tether to secure the seat, then the seat belt to secure your child. Does anyone know which is recommended?

And if you don't use the LATCH, should I remove the LATCH and tether straps? The manual doesn't make any mention of these when they talk about removing the harness - which makes me think I'm supposed to leave them on and just tuck them in somewhere.

Re: Graco Nautilus - LATCH in booster mode?

  • Graco allows LATCH in booster mode for the Nautilus. Originally they didn't, but they changed their stance on it. The older models say not to in the manual, but the newer manuals have been changed to say you can. If you call Graco they will tell you it's ok. If we ever use our Nautilus as a booster it will be LATCHed in my van. That seat is HEAVY and I can't trust my kids to make sure they buckle it in when they get out of the van, and I really don't want it to become a projectile!

  • I don't have an exact answer to this but I know our fire department does child seat safety checks and they are always up to date on things so maybe try there? Ours has certain days/times they do this or you can set up an appointment

  • How much does your child currently weigh?

Yes, you use the LATCH when in highback booster mode. Just check your car manual to see what the max. weight is for your anchors and you are fine.

When using LATCH in booster mode the limits won't matter because the anchors are only holding the seat in place, not the child. The vehicle's seatbelt is still what would hold the child in place in an accident.

  • Thanks all. DD is tiny - 38 lbs at 6 years old. So nowhere near the 48lb limit for the LATCH in harness mode.

And I know the recommendation for the booster is 4 years and 40lbs (althought Graco says 30lbs as a minimum) but at 6 years old and 44" she is MORE than ready for booster mode.
