Parenting after 35

Has anyone done a FET? (really long)

DH & I just had our consult with our RE to find out more about a FET.  We are going to cycle in September and I am really excited. We have 5 snow babies (frozen in two pairs and a single)

The Dr answered all our questions but can't (I think legally?) tell us how many to transfer. He recommends based on SART data to transfer 2 for my age group. Having two children already I'm nervous to transfer two but I also really want a BFP. We are out of pocket so we would need to save up again if it doesn't work.

Here is my history. . .

I am 38 my snow babies are from 36YO eggs. We were able to conceive DD #1 on our own after several failed IUI's and roughly 3 years of actively TTC.  DD #2 was conceived via IVF on our first try.  We transferred two and both took but we had vanishing twin syndrome and lost baby B early in the PG. I have no problems carrying to term and have very uneventful pregnancies.  As my RE said my uterus is "proven."  These are the stats he gave based on my age group and the fact that I have children already (they are general stats, not based on my chart specifically) if we transfer 2, I have a 65-70% chance of a BFP but a 35% chance of twins. If we transfer one I have a 45-50% chance of a BFP.

Any perspective from Parenting over 35 moms? I think writing this out is helping me to decide but any advise or point of views that I'm not thinking of would be helpful. Wow this got long sorry!!

Thanks Jess! Hopefully I get lucky and it works for me the first try but on this journey called IF nothing ever seems to work out how you want it too!!

  • If you ask your doctor to make a recommendation as to how many to transfer, he can.  A lot of it depends on the quality of the embryos when they were frozen and whether they make the thaw.  So that is totally in the realm of the RE's expertise.

If it were me, I would transfer two... but I would also ask my RE to make a recommendation.

    Best of luck to you.

Thanks Jammie!  My RE is really vague and said he would recommend 1-2 which really doesn't help me much!!  I will ask more questions about quality before we go to transfer. When we did our fresh cycle I was OK with twins but now that we have two children I'm more hesitant to transfer two.  Of course God could have different plans for me and I transfer could transfer my one single and it could split into twins anyway!!  Thanks for the tips!

I think most RE's success rates with FETs are lower but I am a big believer in not putting in more than you are willing to have.  Would it be a possibility to start with transfering one and if you weren't successful trying a second time with two?
