Keep running?

I started running for the first time in my life on June 1. Just this past Friday, I found out that I am pregnant again. Yesterday was my first doctor's appointment and it turns out I am 10 weeks, which means I was already pregnant when I started. I haven't run for two weeks because one week was insanely hot and this week I just haven't made it a priority but I would like to start out again. I am following the couch to 5K program and am not the type to push myself if I don't feel good. I know plenty of people run through pregnancy but they are always runners before. Since I technically started after getting pregnant, should I keep it up or stop? I would like to be in better shape through this pregnancy than my last two!

Re: Keep running?

  • I'd see what the doctor says on this one.  If you have been in shape doing other activities (swimming, biking, going to the gym, etc) then running is probably of similar equivalence and I would think it would be fine to run moderately at short (5K) distances.  I would definitely be careful about running or even walking in the heat though.  Good luck!

I have never been an exerciser, at least not in over 10 years. I had so much on my mind yesterday at the doctor that I didn't even ask.

  • Get fitted for good running shoes, stay hydrated, and have fun!  Shorter distances should be just fine, provided you are in good health & are low-risk.  But as PP said, make sure you don't get overheated!
  • I would check with your doctor.  I was very active and training for a 10K when I found out I was pregnant with my LO.  My doctor advised me to stop running at that point.  I did have an MC and it took 2 rounds of Clomid before I got my BFP, so he may have just been extra cautious....
