We have been referred to an allergist bc DD ha been hospitalized 4x (ICU 2x) for asthma and she's only 22months old. We had a RAST test for cats (12.3) but the skin prick next week will be our first full panel test. They will likely test for food allergies too (I have a peanut sensitivity). She has never had nuts of any kind, so my question is how accurate will the but testing be if she has never been exposed? Similarly, we have had zero contact with a cat and have not been in any hes with a cat since the RAST test, is there a likelihood that the skin prick will show less of an allergy than is really present? Hope that makes sense. TIA.
Re: Allergy testing next week...question
I think these are good questions for your allergist. DD had exposure to eggs once before our skin test. And her skin test was positive.
Also our allergist told us the skin test is more accurate than the RAST test. DDs allergist runs RAST tests every 6 months old to follow trends.
And with any child with a food allergy mine recommends waiting until 3 to try nuts even though our skin test was negative.
