Preemies

Tummy time question

My pedi told me we can start tummy time. E has good neck strength and likes to stretch it back in his own when he's in the bassinet or being held so I want to help him develop it. But my question is when? He sleeps and wakes up when he's hungry and then sleeps again until it's time to eat. Do I wake him up for it? Sorry if this is a dumb ftm question but I'm not sure where to ask it and I'm afraid the 0-3 month board will upset me so I haven't even ventured over there yet.

Re: Tummy time question

  • Can you do a few minutes while his bottle is warming?  This works for us, but if you EBF obviously it wouldn't work.

We were told to increase tt for the boys so we do it before every single feeding.  Gives us a good amount of tt.

I forgot to add that maybe he'll stay awake a bit while you're doing tummy time.  He's still young, so his alert periods are going to be short, but it's worth a shot to see what happens.

Yes, something like this :) Just a minute or two a couple times a day - I would just put DS down on his belly when it crossed my mind.

Don't worry about going to the month boards - preemies are in their own timezone.

  • Thanks guys. He is bf  but does get a bottle a day so I'll try it then.  He just passed out after his feeding but I'll try it after the next one. I dont use a carrier at all but that's good to know if I decide to get one.

If I do it while he's sleeping will he try to lift himself? I though that was what we were going for.

Yeah, movement while on tummy is ideal ;) Someone gave me this thing (which I'd laughed at when I saw it online but it turned out to be the perfect thing!) - I would put him on it while alert and he'd be forced to hold himself up, then I'd just remove the bug and let him relax on his belly/fall asleep. He gained a lot of strength from using it.

  • My LO is one month adjusted and not lifting his head yet. We have been struggling so much with his reflux that I didn't do much tummy time w him. The pediatrician told me to do it at every diaper change but he is usually crying. Early intervention therapist said he is more like a preemie than a one month old. I'm worried now bc it's been a challenge to do tummy time with reflux issues. Any ideas?
