Pregnant after 35

Question?

What exactly does a level 2 u/s entail?  I have to have one since I got the results of my quad test.  I am opting out of the amnio.  My chances of having a baby with downs is 1:62.  I was feeling down about that earlier but some of the ladies on the Dec. 2012 board cheered me up.

Both of mine were basically just longer, more detailed ultrasounds.  The first one took just over half an hour, and I had to roll onto my sides a few times because the LO kept rolling the exact opposite of whatever direction they needed.  I had to come back for a second because they just couldn't get any usable images of his heart the first time, and the second Level 2 lasted about fifteen or twenty minutes because they concentrated on his heart for the most part.  The place where I had mine done had a large monitor up on the wall so DH and I could watch everything and the techs would point out things like arms and fingers occasionally as they worked.

  • I believe the level 2 is the anatomy scan. When we had ours, they measured the length of a lot of the bones, looked at his heart to make sure everything was normal there...it was really quite a lot of measurements and very detailed.

  • I just had mine done a few weeks ago. It's basically a very in-depth ultrasound. Mine lasted approx 45mins and the Dr. measured everything possible on the baby. He also checked my cervix, placenta and ovaries. It was the only genetic testing that I've done and it was all I did with my dd also. Thankfully both times everything looked great and no markers where found.

  • It's another name for anatomy scan.  It's a detailed look at the baby.  Special attention is paid to the all the major organs.  Measurements are taken when the baby is lying in a specific position. If the baby doesn't co-operate you may have to go back for a second look.  It takes about 1/2 hour or longer depending on the level of co-operation the tech gets from your lo.  It also looks at the placenta (placement, size, etc) and the cord (2 or 3 vessel and where it attaches to the placenta).  Soft markers for genetic abnormalities are also looked for.  Also if you had a previous diagnosis of a SCH or fibroid, cyst or polyp they will measure and look at that too.
