switching to neocate, any advice, information, experiences?

we are currently on nutramigen and have just received a rx today for neocate with blood in stool after 5 weeks on nutramigen. i have heard it is awful, but my son is just 3 months so i am hoping he takes it ok. how long did it take to see improvements? i am still waiting (fingers crossed) that the insurance covers some of the cost since i almost fell over when i saw the price!!! YIKES!

  • We saw a change in his demeanor within 24 hours. However, it took about 3 weeks for his poo to be clear of any mucus. My LO started taking it at 7-ish weeks old after 4 wks EBF and 3 wks on nutramigen. He didn't take a full bottle at first, but after a couple of days he was taking a full feeding.

  • we are 2 weeks into neocate after alimentum.  She occasionally still has a bit of mucus, but you have to look for it.  My DD took it pretty well.  In the beginning she took a little less in volume than she did with alimentum, and she did the same thing when we had switched from breast milk to alimentum.  But she started taking "normal" volumes within a day or so.  Honestly, the neocate smells way better.  Kinda smells like corn bread IMO, though I cannot account for the taste.  So far I got samples from the pedi GI and I have bought some off craigslist for $10-25 per can!  I mean it is still expensive but not sooo bad!   And I am appealing for medical coverage but who knows how that will go.  Her poops have slightly orange-ish liquid and dark green to black thick peanut butter.  Smells nasty.  At this point I would guess that her fissures are better (I don't see them any more) but her reflux does not seem improved.  She is choking less on her bottles in general.

So all in all things are pretty good and I will keep her on it because it is the safest option.

  • she may not like the taste at first, mine did not. mine went from breast milk to alimentum no problem but would not drink the neocate. i had to gradually mix in oz by oz until she was drinking full bottles. now she drinks it no problem & will go right from breastfeeding to finishing a neocate bottle- she likes the taste LOL.

the poops will be extremely dark green & can be watery which is normal. it took us 2 weeks for a blood-free diaper.

the neocate website has resources for helping to get coverage but my dr office got it covered no problem for us.

  • how did your docs office get coverage for neocate? having issues getting ours covered
