2nd Trimester

s/o Chiropractor

Has anyone been told not to go or that they are dangerous?

I wanted to go because I've been having some crazy hip pain. To the point that walking brings tears to my eyes by the end of the day. I found out that my insurance will cover the visits if I get pre-certification. My OB said that I'd have to contact my primary care to have them do the pre-cert but never said not to go. I called my PCP and they refused stating, "we do not agree with chiropractics during pregnancy as the risk is to high for the baby." The receptionist also spewed a few other unnecessary opinions but whatever.

HUH? I've heard of tons of women going while pregnant and even found a chiro that specializes in pregnancy. I was a bit shocked at their stance & canceled the appointment because it freaked me out. I have an OB appt tomorrow so I'll talk to them more about my options but I was curious to see if anyone else was told not got go.

Re: s/o Chiropractor

  • I have lots of friends who continued to go while pregnant. I haven't had any issues so far so I haven't been yet...I'm sure that will change as the baby grows.

    Henry Cavill...You're welcome!

  • I went earlier on in my pregnancy and I actually just went back yesterday and it felt amazing. I never heard of chiropractors being dangerous for pregnant women, I've even heard of doctors and midwives who recommend it. It actually helps promote easier labor and can help make sure your baby ends up in the right position for birth, too according to the brochure I read in their office yesterday :)

  • I go once a month, and my OB ok'd it.

Some MDs just don't have a high opinion of chiros.  I went to one while pregnant with DS and had a good experience. They do very gentle adjustments during pregnancy because your ligaments and tendons are loose from the hormones.  There is a specific chiropractic technique called Webster's that is done on pregnant women to help turn breech babies. From my understanding, it's been shown in studies to be safe and effective.

  • I worked for a chiro while I was pregnant with DS. I got adjustments every day. I can tell you they are not harmful while pregnant... and for me much needed from the extra weight on my hips! I only wish I didn't live so far away now otherwise I would be there everyday again! You might call your local chiro and see if there is something they can submit to the ins or if they can recommend a chiro friendly dr you can go to for a referral. Also you could go back to your ob and tell them you need the referral from them as the other dr was not helpful. Good Luck!

  • I am 17 weeks pregnant and started going 2 weeks ago, also for hip pain. It has helped tremendously. My OB actually recommended that I go. Just make sure your provider knows you are pregnant and is accustomed to treating pregnant women. I had never been to a chiropractor before, so I can't say how different it is while pregnant, but to me the notable thing is that he doesn't have me lie on my stomach at all, and only on my back for less than a minute or two at a time. I feel like it is very safe and don't see how it could possibly harm the baby.

  • I love chiropractic. I work for the best chiropractor I've ever been treated by! I have been getting treatments before and all through this pregnancy with NO issue what so ever, it's been a life saver. As long as you inform the DC that you are pregnant they will take care of you and your baby.

p.s. A lot of MDs and insurance companies frown on chiropractic, they see it as,"if its not a pill it can't be helpful...." So don't let that detour you from at least giving it a shot.

  • I know many MDs who "don't believe" in chiropractic, funny, I didn't think it was a religion or Santa Claus.  Chiropractic is safe for both mother and child.  I have know babies who have beed adjusted since birth and mothers have been adjusted through every stage of pregnancy.  I also personally know many couples who were told they were infertile of MDs only to become pregnant within a few months of regular chiropractic care.

Chiropractic focuses on the inside out vs the outside in traditional alopathic model.  As such MDs and DCs (Doctor of Chiropractic) can easily be at odds.  If everyone was regularly adjusted MDs would make a lot less money.

Does your insurenance have a co-pay?  On mine seeing a chiropractor has a $35 specialist copay.  I know several DCs who have cash practices and charge $35 a visit or less.  Some also offer monthly plans.  If some of it would be coming out of pocket anyway (or health savings...) then you may be able to find on that would charge a comprable amount without going through insurance.

  • It is important that the chiropractor you go to has special training for adujusting pregnant women. There are certain normal adjustments that can cause problems such as pre-term labor but as long as the chiropractor knows what he/she is doing you should be fine. During my last pregnancy my doctor actually recommended a chiropractor for me. She does an amazing job and was a big help when my back and hip pain got to be unbearable. I have had hip problems my whole life, and back problems for many years so I deffinatly needed the adjutments during pregnancy.
  • I am currently 15 weeks pregnant and have been going to the chiropractor since before I was pregnant. The only thing I have to add to everyone else's responses is that at my chiropractor they have an adjusting table where the part of the table that would be putting pressure on your mid section while laying on your belly can be adjusted/ let down. This keeps pressure off of your belly and baby :)
