So I am an avid golfer. I have been golfing since the age of 14. During my college years I would spend summers going out nearly 5 days a week. I got pretty good actually, getting near scratch golf skills. Of course, once I had to grow up, the frequency of going out went down a great deal. Last summer I had my handicap at a 9.
I have only been out a handful of times this summer. In Wisconsin we are lucky if we can get out in April, and if we are really lucky, like last year, we can stay out until early November. I have only been able to golf once in my life on November 30, my birthday.
I thought it would be interesting to start a golf thread, and see where it leads to. We just had the Women's US Open here at Blackwolf Run, and we have had two PGA Championships here recently at Whistling Straits.
I know golf is going to go way down low on the priority list for me once baby is here, and it is kind of bittersweet for me. I am looking forward to when Jacob is old enough to join me on the course, but until than, the times that I get to go out will be few and far between for some years.
Best Course Played: Tie between Starr Pass (Tucson) and Whistling Straits (Wisconsin)
Best Score: 78 at Lawsonia-Woodlands. A very, very difficult track.
Clubs in the bag: Ping irons and Taylor Made Drivers. I also have a Tight Lies 7 wood that has saved me a lot of times.
Hole in Ones: 1 Alpine Valley 139 yards
Dream Golf Trip: Play all of the Kohler Courses in Wisconsin. Or spend a spring week on Hilton Head palying all the courses I can, finishing off with Harbor Town.
Does the wife golf: NO!!! I am torn on this. Part of me enjoys having it to myself, but another part of me wants her out there with me in those cute, sexy outfits that the ladies wear now on the courses.
Re: How Life Will Change For The Golfer.....Post Baby Arrival.
I know, I'm a girl, but I just saw your post (I get on the Dad's board to get the real deal of what's going on) so I had to post about my hubby and give some words of encouragement. He played professionally on the mini-tours for years and now he owns a golf cart place in town.
It does change after you have a LO, but he picked up Disc Golf which is a lot of fun and only tkaes about 45min to play 18 holes. Plus he can take little man with him in the stroller. So maybe you could look into that. But yes, he is looking forward to taking Asher to the course to hit balls, to the Masters, and he even has his own little putter already
I think it's good for Dad's to have some special time with their kids.
Those SuMo drivers are nice!!
I have never played the two WI course you mention. With so many between Milwaukee and Oostburg (our cabin) I rarely get up that far north. I remember playing a course near Minocqua when I was in HS, but I forget the name. I also played Cherry HIlls once up in Door County. Lawsonia is about as far away from Milwaukee where I play regularly. I am playing Fairways of Woodside this weekend, so I am pretty hyped about that. Play it all the time, but it is still a nice new course.
Great Story!! And you are 100% correct. It is very important for fathers to spend some real time with the kids like this. The best memories we have of our father is when he took us to ballgames or golfing, and he acted as much like a kid as we were!
We bought our neice a little golf kit when she turned two. She is always reminding her father and I that she "cannot wait to go golfing with her daddy and uncle!!
Twins=no golf
I've played once this year with my dad. My wife stays at home with the boys all day so I feel bad if I then go play golf 4-5 hours on a weekend and don't help her. I'm such a good husband:)
Next weekend my dad and I are playing in a fund raiser and its a mystery trip. They charter a bus and you don't know where you are going and they take you and then feed you. Should be a good time I'm just hoping this drought hasn't totally killed whatever course we play.
I'm actually a lot better bowler. After we got married I took a couple of years off, but have bowled the last few years. Last year I told my team I would bowl up till the babies were born, which we were hoping was going to be early December. However they came in October so I only got to bowl a few weeks. I look forward to teaching my kids to bowl because I had a lot of fun times in youth leagues.
Like the PP, I'm just a lurking mom. My hubby is an avid golfer, and living in San Diego, he especially loves to go play Torrey Pines. Since the kiddo has been born, we have made a deal for him to go about once a week (he's in a league) as long as his tee time is in the early AM so he can be home most of the day (he's usually home by 1). Obviously, this didn't get implemented until life slowed down, and, being from the midwest myself (MN born and raised), I know golf season is more limited up there, but it's doable to get out and have some "me" time as a daddy. As a mom who needs plenty, I know DH appreciates that we've worked this out so he can have some alone time without having to worry about diaper duty or work. And, it means that I get some "me" time too.
Just wanted to let you know there's hope for your game ;-)
