Failing at BW'ing

I like the idea of BW'ing, and thought I would be doing alot of it.  I'm not at all and I feel pretty guilty about it.

Let's say I'm going to the mall.  Thought I would for sure do it there.  Once she is asleep in her carseat,  I am not taking her out to put in the carrier ( I have a Moby wrap).  When she wakes up it seems awkward to get that big 'ole wrap out and put her in it.  Many times I just carry her and push the stroller.

Thought we would go for walks.  I think I've taken her out in it 5-6 times.  Its really hot here right now, even at 7 or 8 pm its kind of uncomfortable with the wrap on.

Around the house I've tried getting things done while wearing her but honestly its more of a pain.  I'm worried about whacking her head on something and its hard to bend over say to load the washing machine.  Its easier to put her in her RnP or activity gym.  I feel like I'm just ditching her alot during the day and it would be better for her to be carried around.   She is 4 mos, 3 adj.

What am I missing here or doing wrong?  Thanks

Re: Failing at BW'ing

  • To me it's much easier to BW around the house with LO on your back. I don't like cooking dinner with LO on my chest, or as you said bending over to do things, but it's much easier in a back carry. But you need a woven wrap or SSC for that.

For the mall, or quick errands into shops I much prefer a sling. LO just slips in and out and it's much less hassle than a stroller. But my LO is out of her capsule now.

I don't think there is a right way to BW. Some people feel very strongly about it from a philosophical stance, and some people do it for convenience. I'm probably somewhere in between. I love to BW, but I'm not going to wake a sleeping baby just to put her in a carrier

Also, apparently mobys are very hot. There are lots of lightweight but supportive wovens that are cooler.

  • Yeah, sounds like you have the wrong carrier. Also, when going on walks or shopping of any kind, I make myself do it. It is so nice to have two hands and be able to walk away from your stroller or cart.

  • It might be time for a SSC. I used the Moby exclusively until DD was about 3 months old. Then I got an Ergo and haven't used the Moby since. I agree about not waking a sleeping baby, but usually only if we're going to eat somewhere and I can set her down. For shopping, I've actually gotten DD out of her carseat and into the Ergo while she's asleep, and most of the time she settles back down.

  • I would always take DD our of the car seat when I got to my destination because she sleeps better in the carrier than the car seat. Around the house I found the same thing, a back carry is the way to go. When lo #2 arrives I'm going to master a NB back carry, I swear!!

I'd get a different carrier. I have a Babyhawk and it's great, not hard to get on and easy to adjust between parents (you can get one side black for DH).

  • With the Moby I always put it on before I left the house so there wasn't the hassle of putting it on when I was out. Of course I had winter babies...

I don't bring my stroller in the car hardly ever, but I also had babies who would wake up anyway when I stopped the car, or at the very least when I took the car seat out, so we never took the seats out. Even when my kids would wake up during the transfer they would almost always fall right back to sleep once I had them on.

I don't like wearing my kids around the house either in the summertime. In the winter when it's nice to have a warm body next to yours I do it, but in the summer I can't.

  • I would look into other carriers, too. I had a ring sling I liked with my younger son, but I really love using a Beco Butterfly. Make yourself use it once a day, or x times a week - it's a habit, just like anything else. hth

  • Thanks for suggestions, they are very helpful.  I will try another type of carrier and see if I can give it another go.

  • I know what you mean about slipping the carrier into a stroller, but when LO gets bigger, that will get less practical.

Already said, but.... Ring sling. Way easier and quicker. (And I loved my Moby when LO was small.)

Ditto the suggestion to get the Moby or sling on/ready before you leave. These days, I do that even in the grocery store with DS in the cart. For sure, he will melt and want to be held at some point in the store, so I'm just ready for it when it happens.
