Anyone know when the recommendations regarding synagis and the upcoming rsv season are made? My 25 weeker will be turning 1 at the beginning of the season (october 22) and Im trying to get an idea if she will qualify for the shots.
Ive lurked here a few ties before but never intro'd. My daughter, Virginia, was born at 25 weeks weighing 1lb 7 oz after almost a month of hospital bedrest. She spent 124 days in the NICU... 56 days intubated, PDA, lots of issues with diuretics, almost 1.5 months of PO feeding struggles. Amazingly she came with no meds, no oxygen and no monitors.
Re: synagis question
My pediatrician mentioned starting the paperwork at our appointment earlier today. The first dose would be given in October, and he said it will take about a month to process it with insurance. So I'd call your pediatrician and ask sometime in late July / early August (unless your next visit is earlier). Wikipedia has listed the American Academy of Pediatrics guidelines (link below), but from what I've read a lot of it will have to do with your insurance company and whether there are other complicating factors (lasting lung issues, etc.).

I'm looking forward to seeing what parents who have gone through the process think about the process and overall timing. My son was born at 32 weeks, 0 days, so I think I'm likely to have to appeal with my insurance company...
Congratulations on the birth of your daughter.
My oldest never qualified for synagis after that first initial year (but she was born at 33w). Good luck.
Our Dr. told us at his 6mth appointment that LO most likely won't qualify for synagis, he meets to 30 weeker and less than 1 year requirement. But Dr said the next thing they look at is health and that Manny is "too healthy" if that's possible. Basically he said there are other kids that will be more in need of the vaccine.

Thanks for all of the input! We have a pedi appt this coming week so this is at the top of my list of questions. My daughter came off oxygen at 39w adjusted and off diuretics at 41w adjusted, but has shown to have some residual pulmonary hypertension, so Im not sure where that is all going to put us for qualifying. Thankfully she has not gotten any colds or illnesses, but on the downside we have no idea how she will react to a respiratory illness... this makes me nervous should we not qualify for coverage.
As an aside, I find the standard synagis guidelines frustrating or perhaps I am not understanding them correctly? By the standard birth age and actual age qualifications my daughter wont qualify. She was born at 25 weeks but will turn 1 yo one week before the start of the season. Had she been born 3 weeks later she would qualify (not yet one by the start of the season) but would have been a healthier (?) 28 week preemie.
