5 yr old dd suddenly having accidents frequently. Help!

She's been fully potty trained for quite a while now. Well she had a few accidents last week, one Sunday, two yesterday at summer camp and one today at summer camp. She's otherwise acting like her normal self, says it doesn't hurt to pee and isn't going super frequently or trying to go and nothing happening. What's going on? How do we get this to stop?

  • Is it possible she is constipated? If she is really backed up she may not feel the urge to go pee until it's a little too late. I have no idea if this is the case but it happened to my DD. We couldn't figure out what was going on so I took her to the pedi. She had been pooping about every other day but he said that it was too firm and that she was actually quite backed up. After about a week of Miralax she was back to normal. Either way, good luck!

  • Ditto the constipation-

the pressure from the bowel on the bladder disguises the urge to urinate. So check that- if she fully isn't evacuating the bowel- accidents happen. (gone through this a couple of times)

    try prunes/prune juice or miralax.

Also- it is common to regress- so you just have to roll with it and things will go back to normal.

  • Even if she says it doesn't hurt you might want to have her checked for a UTI just in case.

  • Thank you for the suggestions.

  • I have been dealing with something similar with my 6 year old who has been trained for 3 years and rarely has accidents.  She has been checked for a infection (all clear) and the ped has us doing a few weeks of Miralax to see if that helps.  Even if she poops everyday, she might not be getting everything out.  If that doesn't work, we will be seeing a ped urologist for further testing.
