Recommend your carrier, please

I didn't wear DS that often. We had a Bjorn, and it wasn't that comfy. I'm trying to decide now if it's practical to invest in a new carrier for DD or if I'll end up using the double stroller more often than not. I looked at ERGO, and it looks good, but I'm not even sure which model, or if that's the best option. If you have a carrier you love, can you tell me what's so great about it? Thanks!

  • I can't speak to the double stroller since I've only got one kiddo.

But a lot of people love the Ergo and my DH is a fan now that it's a little warm for the Pikkolo.  We liked having the Pikkolo at first because it has all the benefits of the Ergo without needing an infant insert.

My favorite carrier is my Babyhawk Mei-tai.  It's adorable (tons of fun patterns), super easy to put on (just ties in front or back), you can use it from birth, comfortable even for long periods of time, and the little guy likes it (which is obviously important).

I'll have to look at the Mei-tai too. I like anything that's comfy for me and LO.

  • I have an Ergo and a Mei tai.

The Ergo is DH's he loves it. We only got it when DD was big enough to not need an insert. I don't like wearing it on my front but back carry is fine. DD is now 12 months and she's not knee to knee. I don't know how much longer we can use it for. (Oh we have the sport). An issue with the Ergo is that the back isn't very high so a LO can end up outgrowing it due to torso hight rather than leg length first.

The Mei tai was mine before someone borrowed it for way too long. It's easy to front carry and back carry (I found it easier to learn than the Ergo). You can adjust to easily from person to person and the Babyhawks can reverse to black so you can have your girly print and DH can wear it as a black carrier therefore making it more manly :)

Both of these will probably get you to 18ish months fitting correctly.

A GREAT option is the Manduca. It fits starting at the newborn stage without a big bulky insert, it zips open to make it taller to fit larger kids, it's easy to wear, you can cross the straps in the back for a front carry and it's DH friendly.  These things are great and if I'd known how great they were before I got the Ergo I'd get one of these every day of the week :)

  • When LO was just born, I liked carrying him in the K'tan- it was VERY simple, and I liked how easy I could put him in there without all the extra fabric a Moby-type has...but I have a very big boy (98th percentile!) so he outgrew it pretty fast...IMO I thought it wasn't too expensive so I was happy with the time I used it, and I'm hoping my next baby will be able to use it a little longer.  I just bought an Ergo (original) and I LOVE it.  LO loves it, and so does DH.  DS seems very comfortable- he has full head control and loves that he can see everything without being squished inside, and I like that in a little while I can back carry him.  So for me, I like the K'tan for the first few months, then the Ergo for the rest of the time.
  • I always recommend the Beco Gemini. It is very similar to an Ergo (but has no infant insert, you can carry the baby almost from birth in it, I got mine at 3 months) but if you have a smaller frame the Gemini is better. I tried both and the Gemini simply worked better on me and has the option for forward facing and back carry. It is the longest lasting, most durable carrier I have seen apart from a wrap which combines well with it (for long snuggly hikes). I can still carry DD in on my back in it and she still likes it for short times.

OK, I'm liking the look of the Mei-tai. Is it easy to put on my yourself? One of the biggest considerations for me is if I can get LO into it and it secured to me if I'm the only one there. Also, it looks like it can be used for newborns as well. Anyone know if it works well for them?

I used one from birth (well we started at a week old). I used it with her legs inside froggied.

We started at a week too!

It's really easy to put on - in fact, I find it easier to put on myself than with someone "helping" me.  Inevitably when I'm putting it on someone tries to help with handing me the straps and it's much easier to just reach behind and grab them then try to see where someone else is holding them.
