Have to share -- the perfect 5YO girl gift (not)

DH's brother's family's bday gift for DD just arrived.  He had called 2 weeks ago to ask what DD was interested in.  DH told him princesses, art stuff, books, dress up, etc.  The usual.

So what was this great gift?

An edible arrangement.  With a princess balloon and plastic crown.  For a girl who does not like canteloupe, honeydew or pineapple which is most of it.  And for a house with no storage fridge right now (been dead for a week, which he knew) for this tall arrangement.  So either let it spoil or feed the neighbors.

Guess the neighbors get fruit tonight.  Indifferent

  • I admit, it is a very unusual birthday gift for a 5 year old girl. But it is healthy:)) So think of it as a gift to the whole family.  Cantaloupe, honeydew, and pineapple don't have to be in the fridge. Just start eating one by one. And sharing with neighbors is a nice gesture:)

  • That is a really strange gift for a 5 YO! Aren't they really expensive too? What's wrong with some coloring books and crayons or a doll?

  • OMG! My sister in law did the same thing when DD1 turned 6.  Except it wasn't a fruit one, it was a granola/rice krispie treat basket that DD would eat NONE of.  And my DD is probably the easiest kid in the world to buy for when she was little.  I was completely floored that someone would get a little kid food for their birthday instead of say a Barbie doll.  A lot cheaper and much more appropriate.

He would have been better  off sending a box of sugary cereal. I am sure there's a Barbie or princess themed one out there.

  • So sorry....my brother dropped the bag on my son;s 4YO gift so I know how you feel. Hope she loves the balloon!
  • HAHAHA oh my, that's kinda awesome. ...in an unusual way. I'll take the pineapple!
  • Well, I'm sure your DD will enjoy the balloon and crown! It's a shame she doesn't like the fruit, but hopefully your neighbors will like it. We got an edible arrangement once, and although we like fruit, we also couldn't eat much of it before it needed refrigeration, so my DH brought it to his office. I think his coworkers ate it up lickety split!

  • Well, I have to admit that I would LOVE it if someone in my house got that as a gift!    Those things are sooo good!  But DS loves fruit, so we'd have no problems polishing it off in our family.   Like when we get candy in our goody bags from parties.  No candy for DS, but Mama loves it!  Smile

  • very odd choice, especially since you gave them suggestion, but on the bright side they sent a gift.  My SIL and BIL just sent a text to older daughter as her birthday greeting.  Blech.

Agreed - weird choice and definitely more expensive than probaby any other thing that she would have LOVED (including shipping costs!) ... but we are 4 weeks away from EDD and DH's family has sent not one thing for the baby and I'm expecting the same behavior for birthdays, etc. even though we've been the only ones without kids for years and meanwhile have bought their kids (9 all together) something for every bday, every holiday.
