Discolored tooth

DS has a front tooth that is discolored.  It is a grayish color.  I notice it this past week.  During a funeral last week I notice his mouth was bleeding but I checked and he seemed fine.  I am not sure if he injured his tooth or if something else is causing the problem.  We brush twice a day, he only drinks water and takes one sippy of milk a day.  He eats sweets but not a ton and only at family gatherings.

Thoughts?

(Oh and he does have an apt with the dentist this coming Friday)

I am just curious if anyone has experience this and if it is an injury if the discoloration disappeared.

Re: Discolored tooth

  • A good friend of mine's DD hit her front tooth over Christmas and her tooth was a dark greyish color. Dentist said to just be extra careful for a few weeks not to hit it or injure it any more. It's fine but is still fading. Now it's just a very light greyish color. Barely noticeable but it's still there. If I remember correctly, they were more worried about it having injured the permanent tooth and I think they took X-rays to make sure everything was ok up above.

  • I both have a DD with he same thing and work at a pediatric dentist.  It is definitely due to some type of trauma...most likely the incident you mentioned.  More than likely, if he is eating normally and not complaining, there is nothing to worry about.  My office wouldn't even take an X-ray of a grey tooth, on a toddler, that is asymptomatic....rarely is there ever an issue.  I would say that 90% of the kids we see under the age of 5 have or had a grey tooth.  Also, it will likely lighten over time.  Just keep a look out for a white dot on the gums above the tooth.... Very rarely an abcess can form, and that is how they start.  GL

  • Thank you so much (both of you!) for taking the time to post.  I feel somewhat better.  I've been worried about this tooth for the past few days and have to wait until Friday to have him seen.  But this post makes me feel a bit better.  Thanks again!

Our dentist told us the gray discoloration was from minerals in the vitamins we gave. Changed brands and it went away.

DS knocked his front tooth bad about 2years ago.  It chipped a bit and after a few weeks it turned a light brownish gray.  It was almost barely noticible when then about 9 months ago he was wrestling with his older cousin and took a knee to that same tooth and knocked it a little wiggly.  If firmed back up but it got darker again :( I can't win...DS always falls face first - more like teeth first.
