double stroller?? and recomenations!!

hello, I'm 7 weeks pregnant w/ #2, DD will be almost 3 when LO arrives and i'm wondering if I should get a double stroller or if it will be useless??

We live in Chicago  and do a decent amount of walking in the neighborhood (Bridgeport) as well as at zoo's and museums.

i currently have a city micro and hate it, since DD has gotten bigger the front wheel gets stuck in even the smallest cracks! So I'm definitely on the market for something new, but should I go with a double, a sit-n-stand or just get a single and maybe add a boogie bored to the back??

So what are your thoughts? I defiantly want something with 'real' tires.......and that's the extent of my thoughts thus far!

TIA!!

  • Our kids are 26 months apart and at the time everyone said not to get a double b/c DS wouldn't use it. DS is now 3.5 and doesn't always want to ride in it but I'm glad to have it for when he does. We actually have 2 - a Bumbleride Indie Twin (real tires, pushes like a dream, but a beast and very heavy) and a Joovy Caboose Ultralite which I LOVE. Doesn't have real tires but handles all terrain well and is light enough to throw in the trunk of a car or cab quickly.

  • My kids are 22 months apart and we were living in Manhattan until two weeks ago. Until last summer (so when they turned 2 and 4) my double stroller was critical, so if you're living in a city I would imagine you'll need it.

I have a Phil and Ted's classic, which looks like a regular jogging stroller but has a "jump" second seat on bottom (there are many variations on this now, when I got it that was the only game in town). I love love love that stroller. Since it's a double in the footprint of a single it is much easier to maneuver in tight shops (common in NYC) and crowded streets. It handles beautifully and pushes like a dream (with two kids in it I can push it one-handed). We haven't needed it as a double in a long time, but I use it frequently as a single as well when my almost 3 year old is exhausted.

The only issue is that you can't use it for a newborn and toddler. The baby has to be able to hold his/her head up well because it doesn't lay flat and you can't use the carseat adapter with a kid in the bottom seat (not a problem for me because my kids loathed the infant carseat anyway). So for the first three months I put the baby in a sling and the toddler in the seat. The baby was happier anyway because she was a constant nurser.

Yes you can. I have the E3, and like all P&T's, they lay flat. There are little V adaptors that come with the second seat to put the jump seat up front. And the latest versions have fixed the issue with the infant seat making the jump seat unusable. That has been fixed for all models. Love love love ours.

Both my younger two spent lots of walks snuggled in the cocoon with a big sister in front of them. And voila, pics.

Also, check out their new strollers, the Dot may work well for you.

  • I use my double all the time.  Even with the older one being almost 4, if we're going somewhere with a lot of walking, he's in the stroller.

I have a BG Summit and love it.  I use it for both walks and when I run.

  • We have the city select by baby jogger. It can be a single, doublr single +toddler glider board or used with car seat attachments, or bassinet attachment. I still use it a lot and I loved how it was stadium seating so the older kid could see out and wasnt  riding on the ground like Phil and teds and didn't take up any of your storage space.

All of the seats combinations rotate and overall gave me the most flexibility with living in a city without buying more than one stroller.

Oh my goodness, it's been so long that I totally forgot about that feature! How's that for head in the clouds? We used it like that for a while and it was great, I just completely forgot now!

  • We have the City Mini Double Stroller and LOVE it.

DD is 1.5 and DS is 4 and we've had it about a year now. It makes life so much easier for me and the kids love it!
