Quick Vent

Okay, sooooo I have a co worker who thinks she's a know it all, esp when it comes to pregnancy (she had twins and another boy like 35 yrs ago... and she likes to remind anyone that will listen.. everyday. all day.) I work in a Dr's office and a vast majority of our pts are eldery, so they come in with a slew of things I'd rather not be around.. MRSA, pneomonia, etc, and she gets extremely agitated at me when I have to check in pts with these things, because I'm jeopordizing the babies health, blah blah blah. Which is true, don't get me wrong, but I wash my hands and do my best to avoid skin contact and like, not lick anyones open sores and stuff when I know I'm working with a pt who has something less than desirable.. so it's not like I'm not trying. Sometimes it just can't be avoided.

Anyway!

So a few weeks ago I find out from another co-worker that original co-worker has shingles, (and had them for a few weeks before she decided to do anything about it) and decided not to tell me because she didn't think it was a big deal, since she knew I already had chicken pox. This is the same woman who chewed out another office mate for having a cold and not telling me so I could call the dr.  Sooo, I called my OB anyway to mention it, who said to come in for blood work. I got the results today annnnnd I am in the clear, but the baby has the virus.

We see a perinatologist in a week to check the baby's health and growth and such, and I'm avoiding my insane urge to google this, because I am sure I will find nothing but horrid things.

SOOOO I tell everyone that I'll be gone on X date/time and of course she asks why, so I tell her, without being accusatory, because I'd really like to just scream BECAUSE YOOOU GAVE MY BABY CHICKEN POX, B... and she says it's my own fault for checking in patients who might have given me the virus. Even if that is where I got it from.. umm, hello rude?!

Flame me if you want, but I just needed to get that out. Thanks for letting me rant!

Re: Quick Vent

  • I'd be upset too... particularly since she seemed to always have an opinion on your baby's health when it dealt with others but not when it was related to her.

Good luck at your perinatologist appointment. I hope your baby is doing wonderfully.

  • No flames from me. She is being completely hypocritical. She didn't tell you because I am assuming you can't avoid her like you could some patients. Keep taking care of you and your baby. Good luck with the Doc next week.

Your licking statement made me almost spit Vitamin Water on my keyboard.

And I totally would have said what you have in caps. I would be super pissed. I didn't even know babies could get chicken pox in utero!

Agreed. I'd be super pissed that she tried to blame you knowing that she has shingles. That's ridiculous.

Agreed!  I can't believe she didn't tell you she had Shingles.  If she wants to pretend to be your Dr then she should have told you.  What a rude b!tch.

  • Also, I would be pissed if I were your practice manager or physician, given that she was exposing elderly patients with lower immune systems, too!

I didn't even think about that! Has she been reported and the patients she has been in contact with notified. Isn't shingle pretty contagious?  I am too lazy to google how it is spread.

No kidding!  Not every adult has had chicken pox, and the elderly are at higher risk for major issues from stuff like that!

It's hard to be too mad at someone that stupid, though.

I didn't even think of this, but this is so true! Not only did she infect your baby, but she could have done so with all those patients. She can't even take responsibility for her actions. What a peach.

This too! I work a similar job to your and I watch it when we have patients come in, but for your co-worker to do that! I would have totally called her out. I have done it in the past before I was even pregnant. I didn't know babies could it now. Good for you to not use Dr. Google.

    Ew.

    Ew.

Sounds like a lovely working environment. Does this mean your baby doesn't need the chicken pox vaccine?

  • Oh wow I would be livid!!! Just because YOU had the chicken pox doesn't mean your baby has had them!

I work in a hospital and I got floated to a different floor. The charge nurse (who was 7 months pregnant) gave me a patient with shingles, I told her I wasn't able to take the patient because I was pregnant, about 4 months then. She said the same thing to me "Well you had the chicken pox didn't you" Well yes, but pregnant women aren't allowed to be around patient's with shingles. I was so upset because she was basically forcing this patient on me, I made her call house supervisor. House said the same thing that I said. Then she looks at me and told me that she had that patient last week..... well I am sorry that you are not smart enough to realize you shouldn't have been around those type of patients.

Sorry that just annoys me, anyone working in a healthcare environment knows better. Anyways, patients that have shingles and they are open are on airborne isolation, at least in my hospital they are.

I am not sure. I see my regular OB Friday and I'm going to ask what I should expect, and then the appt with the perinatologist is a week from today. I will post an update afterward!!

And thanks, ladies, for the kind words. I really appreciate them!  I am sending her evil dagger eyes through my cubicle from all of the Sept 12 moms!

Aside from this, I think you can still get shingles even if you've had chicken pox.  It's a different strain of the same virus...I *believe*.   However, I'm not a doctor or a nurse, but I want to say that I've read that somewhere.

I'd straight up let that lady know your exposure came from her.   What a hag!   Hope your LO is okay.

  • Wow... that lady is a piece... Im sorry.  Just out of curiosity, how did they find out your baby has Chicken Pox but you don't?  Just curious of the logistics of that...

    Hope everything works out...

:snort:  I like you, please post more.

I'm sorry your baby is sick. Keep us updated. I've never heard of this.

After I had heard that she had shingles, I called my Dr to see what I should do, if anything. She recommended doing some blood work to see if the virus is present (I'm not sure how that would work, since I'd think it'd always be present since I've had the chicken pox before). Anyway, she said that they tested my past immunity, which was basically verifying that I had actually had chicken pox before, and that came up good. She also said the tested my current immunity, which I didn't understand, but basically it came down to.. I am immune but the virus is still present, which means that the baby is carrying it. Whether or not LO is in me, with like spots all over it or whatever I am not sure. I'm hoping to have some better answers after the appt on the 16th.

  • Prayers for you that your LO is ok.  That lady is a total B. I would have let her have a piece of my mind...grrr.
  • WOW!!!  I would not have been able to hold my tongue when she got condecending telling you that it was basically your fault!!  Best not to google, wait for your appointment!  Prayers that everything is ok with your LO!!
