S/O BBQ

Tell me about the BBQ where you live.

Obviously the only *true* BBQ is Eastern NC style--vinegar-based pork, served on a bun with slaw or on a plate with a side of hushpuppies.  But I realize that people in other parts of the country (bless their hearts) think that their style of BBQ is best.  So I'm curious.

Re: S/O BBQ

  • We don't have good BBQ.  The only good BBQ places close shortly after opening because people around here don't want to eat tasty BBQd meat.

The places that are still open are gross.

Reasons 102932104 I should've been a Southerner.  (None of those reasons are racisy reasons.)

This is the truth!!  I only get good BBQ on our way to OBX.  ::drooling::

  • I don't think NoVA has a BBQ style. Lol. And BBQ where I come from is hot dogs and burgers on the grill.

Therefore I will take whatever anyone makes or whatever I can get in whatever BBQ state we visit.  But I have a major love for BBQ brisket.

It's smoky, not too spicy and really good bbq sauces!

  • Kraft BBQ sauce?

LoLz - for real. We don't have much of a BBQ following by me.

  • WA doesn't have a BBQ style that isn't go online & get a recipe.  lol.

My fave style is NC though.  Mmmmm

My idea of BBQ is pretty much how you described. I like western (tomato based) sauce but eastern is my go to. Also, Brunswick stew. Can we talk about that amazingness?
  • Also, sometimes the Asian organizations will roast a whole pig overnight and invite the Asian community to partake.

I went once because DH worked for one of the organizations.  I almost got trampled by eleventybillion tiny elderly Asian women with really sharp elbows.

    Never again, dudes.  Never again.

    The vinegar base is key!

This is my siggy. Love it.

  • I hate BBQ. Does that make me un-American? I think it might, especially since I also dislike apple pie and potato salad.

I honestly don't know if Denver has a style...

CG sums it up well. However, there is a place in I think Sea-Tac that is pretty decent. Can't remember.

Supposedly the best BBQ in the world or something. I still haven't eaten there because it's like a 2-3 hour wait in line and they generally sell out by 1pm. I've heard of people paying other ppl to wait in line for them.

I don't know enough about it to explain what makes our BBQ in Texas different than other places. I'm just frustrated bc I want to try this place SO bad but I can't justify the wait.

Me thinks you posted the wrong thing?  hahaha
  • I am definitely a Lexington BBQ kind of girl, having grown up about 15 miles from Lexington, NC. It is pulled pork with a red sauce and served with BBQ slaw, which is vinegar-based and absolutely delicious. I can appreciate an Eastern BBQ sandwich, though.

Some of my friends are from other parts of the country and have invited us over to "BBQs" at their house. I always lol at this. A BBQ to them is hamburgers and hotdogs on the grill. We call that a cookout. BBQ is pulled pork!! Kind of an inside joke in our circle of friends.

This!!! Sweet Baby Ray's is my favourite bbq sauce. We always keep it on hand and it makes a really good slow cooker pulled pork!

I have friends that live in Austin and SWEAR by this place! One of my friends said they went early in the morning to get in line and they put their kids in swimsuits (they are all older) and they said their is a splash pad near the restaurant and the kids played while they waited in line.

Texas has the best bbq. The end. Period.

Oh so that's what it means! I've been confused and thinking I need a US-Canadian dictionary bc to people up here, a BBQ is when you cook stuff outside. We don't have "cookouts" and "grilling" means cooking something on a grill, inside or out. Now I can go to the States without embarassing myself. Until I ask for pop.

I miss TX bbq so much. It has a sweet sauce that is to die for. I haven't even tried bbq here so I can't compare (except the chain bar-b-cutie but that doesn't count).  I also really like barbacoa.

Grilling is just putting hamburgers/hotdogs on a grill and calling it good.

If you go to a BBQ restaurant they almost always have ribs. So, imo, ribs are included in "BBQ" terms.

Ahem, I said mayo is wrong on grilled cheese. My favorite sammich in your post had mayo. Keep up, yo!

And I also had never had real cornbread until I made my own. And I retracted.

But BBQ...as in pulled pork in sauce, no bueno. I'm not a pork fan as is and most vinegar or mustard bases are nasty.

I tried Lexington style once and I wasn't super impressed.  It was okay but I didn't think there was anything special about it.  And the slaw was so weird!

I mean, I can eat it, but it's nothing to write home about.

When I first moved to the south from Canada, and someone asked me if I wanted BBQ, my question was, "BBQ'd what?" I'd never heard of it.

It's kind of all the same, though if I am going to have it, I like it with slaw.

Sorry Scout. Please don't deport me.
