I Need Lunch Ideas!

DS is attending a summer preschool camp and has to pack his lunch, we just learned that he cannot bring any peanut products. The problem is, the only kind of sandwich he will eat is PB&J. I also pack fruit and carrots. They can't heat food up and are not allowed to bring lunchables as they are to hard for most of the kids to open.

What can I pack him for his main course? TIA!

Re: I Need Lunch Ideas!

  • Have you tried sunbutter? It's peanut free and is fairly close in taste to peanut butter. Other ideas would be: yogurt, cubed chicken/pork and cubed cheese, cold pasta salad, homemade Lunchables (crackers, sliced ham and cheese etc). Also if you really want to send something in that's warm you can use an insulated thermos. They usually keep foods warm for several hours.

  • We have the same restrictions. We put an ice pack in with DS's food and send a carb, protein and fruit/veggie combo that includes a few of the items listed below. Also, why can't you send your own homemade lunchable? Just put some turkey, cheese and crackers in a tupperware/baggie. Same thing. Cheaper too. :)

Chix nuggets (DS doesn't mind them cold)

Jelly sandwich (maybe an option if your kiddo will only eat PJ&J)

Hot dog (again, doesn't mind them cold)

    Cheese cubes

Fruit (strawberries, banana, kiwi, peaches, watermelon, etc.)

    Yogurt

    Applesauce

Meatballs (again, with the cold thing)

    Leftover waffles/pancakes and sausage

    Grilled cheese

    Quesadillas

    Crackers

    Raisins/yogurt covered raisins

    Cereal

Smoothies (we put them in a little cup with a lid)

Carrots/ranch (though DS doesn't eat these, dangit)

Sunbutter/banana sandwich (we do this toasted like a grill cheese sometimes too)

There are more, but you get the gist. :)

  • Thanks ladies! I guess I should of added DS won't eat lunch meat either, and he will not eat "hot" foods cold. I am trying to find a thermos to put out leftovers from dinner in, but have not had any luck in stores, so now I'll try online.

  • Thermos brand containers can be found at Target in the camping/workout section - though I imagine they'll be in the "back to school" section soon. You preheat them by filling with boiling water and letting stand for a few minutes, empty and dry, then add the food (also heated).
