Preemies

Squeaky baby...

Does anyone else have a noisy/squeaky baby?

DS sounds like a honking goose or seagull when he breathes most of the time!  We were told in the NICU that preemies are generally noisier than FT babies, and he was definitely super noisy then...a lot of his little noises are gone now though except for when he breathes...we've been to the pedi and had them check him a couple times and he said his lungs are completely clear, the noise is all in his upper respitory and is not harming or hurting him.

People often ask us if there is something wrong with his breathing and I have to explain there isn't, the squeaking is just a 'preemie thing'.  But I'm wondering if it really is a preemie thing at this point (if others do it too) or if it's just a Gavin thing?

Re: Squeaky baby...

  • Jack had all kinds of crazy breathing sounds (especially at night), but it did finally go away about a month ago. (Kind of freaks me out while he's sleeping, because I'm so used to him being so noisy... I keep checking to make sure he's breathing!) It probably is a preemie thing that preemies outgrow at different times on their own timetable, just like all the other crazy preemie sounds!

  • My little one was very noisy/squeaky. I realized, recently, that he's no longer so noisy/squeaky.

I actually took a video of him making some of those sweet noises when he was a few months old so we could remember how adorable they were.

I was told those noises are a preemie thing. Our nurses called it the preemie grunt, although I didn't really think it always sounded like a grunt.

  • I'm glad to know others do it too!  None of what he does sounds like a grunt either...he is definitely more honky.

There was this one noise he used to make while sucking on his binky...like a 'wonka wonka wonka' noise and it was soooo cute and I regret never successfully getting it on film because he stopped doing it :-(

  • My husband calls our son "duck baby" because of the quacking like noises that he makes... in addition to the preemie grunt. He's even squeaking as I write this... my parents and my in-laws all say that he's much noisier than my husband and I were as newborns... and I was a 34-weeker.
  • Oh yes...chase sounds like a bleating goat at night...I was wondering if all these weird noises were normal...sounds like it!

  • DS was super grunty/squeaky for several months after he came home. I think we eventually just got used to it and it didn't seem so loud.
