Hair loss? Anybody else notice this?

I have a thick head of hair...I mean thick BUT for the past month I have noticed so much hair in the drain after every shower.  Every morning my pillow is covered in hair and every time I run my fingers through my hair I get a "wad" of hair.

I don't remember this ever happening before.  Has anyone else experienced this?  When will it stop?

  • oh yeah. I thought I was going bald after my DS was born and I stopped my prenatels. Took a few months

  • Oh yeah, post partum hair loss can be downright terrifying if you're not prepared for it. I lose about HALF of the thickness of my hair after each baby. Handfuls and handfuls. My mom is the same way. I actually went in for testing after Baby #2 because it really seemed like there was something very wrong. I also usually lose a bunch right in the front and it grows back in within about 6 months. It sounds like your loss isn't too bad, but trust me, it WILL come back over time. It's just because you don't lose anything while you're pregnant and then your body just suddenly realizes it doesn't need that super thick head of hair. It's the same thing as the way your nails get super strong and grow like crazy. They say part of it is the increased hormones and vitamins and part of it is a biological coping mechanism to protect your body. Crazy!

  • Yep.  I had really bad hair loss from 2.5-6 months.

  • Definitely yes.  I am still shedding and the awesomely bad regrowth has started.  It's not a good look.

  • I've been shedding a lot too. Fistfuls cone out when I shower and when I brush my hair. So annoying!

  • Yes, I had that, and it was glorious! (I have really thick hair too and was so glad to lose some of it.)

With both pregnancies I had hair loss. Form what I've heard it happens because we normally lose about 100 hairs a day, but that stops during pregnancy. Then after the baby is born you lose everything that you would have lost in the last 9 months had you not been pregnant.

My boys are 7 months old and I just recently noticed that the massive hair loss has gone back to normal : (

Definitely and I hated it!  I was so pissed that the one time I had to myself (the shower) I spent a good bit of it dealing with the hair that had fallen out.  Ugh!  I can't remember when it got better, but it eventually did.  It probably didn't hurt that I eventually got my hair cut short too (I was wearing my hair in a ponytail all the time anyway to avoid it being pulled, spit-up in, etc.).

  • I REALLY thought something was wrong with the amount of hair I was losing pp. I had very thick hair pre-pg (as in the thickest my stylist has EVER worked with!), and it got even thicker with pregnancy. I mentioned my concerns bout my hair loss to MH, and he played it off like it was no big deal. He thought it was the same as always. So, one day I saved up all the hair from a SINGLE shower to show him what I was talking about. I had a mound of hair filling a paper plate, like a plate piled high with spaghetti! After that, MH "got it" and never tried to minimize my concerns again.

Good news is the hair loss stopped and the thicknessis coming back.

TTC for 3 years. Finally successful after 5 IUIs and 2 cycles of IVF. Our amazing twins were born 5 weeks early on 8/16/11. Found out April 2012 that our di/di twins are ID.

It's common for women to have pp thyroiditis or hyperthyroidism.  Hair loss is typical with hyperthyroidism.  If it continues, make an appt with your dr or better yet, an endocrinologist to get it checked out.

  • Yep it's very normal, and it will stop eventually.  I had massive hair loss after the girls were born, from about 8w-12wpp, now I have these wonky curly sideburns that are still trying to grow out...most of my loss this time was from my hair line, whereas with my son it was a pretty even distribution of loss.

  • My hair is falling out like CRAZY. It fills the shower drain before I even finish a shower.

yes I lost crazy amounts for about the first 6 months! Now I have these little wispy hairs growing back all along my hairline!
  • Totally normal. During pregnancy your body holds onto all of the hair it would normally shed. Once the babies are out and your hormone levels are closer to normal your body starts releasing all of those hairs.

  • Yes... I lost hair like crazy. It did stop... I don't remember when but it took a couple of months. My hair still looks a little thin in the front so I cut side bangs to disguise it.
