? for those that have switched to a toddler bed

On the occasion that they get up in the middle of the night crying, what do you do? Do you keep putting them back in bed, or let them in bed with you? If you have a child gate up in their room, do they eventually crawl back in their bed, or fall asleep on the floor?

I'm having small panic attacks on how this transition is going to play out lol

His door is locked, the monitor is always on. When he does wake up in the middle of the night, it's almost always because his diaper is super wet. I change him, put him back into the bed, and rub his back. He usually passes out right away. Those few times he does wake up and isn't super wet, it's because he's had a nightmare. If I can't get him to calm down, I just bring him into bed with me.

When he naps, the monitor is on and his door is open so he can just come to us when he wakes up.

ETA - We don't use a child gate because a, there's a door on his room and b, he can climb over child gates. For real.

Pretty much this exactly.  When he first transitioned, he spent many a night sleeping on the floor in front of his door.

  • We have a gate on the door to keep him in.  After trying to stay with him and soothe him to sleep for a while (and it taking longer and longer every night) we finally went cold turkey and let him CIO.  It only took five days until he was going to sleep on his own (and he only slept on the floor twice).  If he woke up in the middle of the night I would tell him "It's night time and mommy and daddy are sleeping.  You need to sleep, too.  I love you!" and leave him in his room as long as he was okay and didn't need anything.

Now that we have him potty trained I go get him when he wakes up in the middle of the night because he only wakes up if he needs to go potty.  After we go to the potty I rock him in the rocking chair for a very short time to get him back in bedtime mode and put him in bed, turn out the light, and leave.  He goes back to sleep on his own.

  • We never moved to  a toddler bed.  We have always moved to a twin and I lay down with them.
