Preemies

Bottles

Can anyone suggest bottles that worked well for their preemie?  I have tried many different bottles and nipples and my lo seems to have a tough time with them.  He gets very tired and spits a lot out.  The only thing that seems to work well with him are the small pre-filled bottles with the disposable nipples (like the ones in the hospital).  But, these are getting very expensive.  Any suggestions are appreciated!

Thanks!

Re: Bottles

  • I tried 3 different bottles until I found one that DD would take (she came  home first). She liked the Gerber Nuk bottles and when DS came home we tried those with him and he seemed to like them as well. DS was very slow with eating as well and we found that as he got closer to my EDD the speed that he ate picked up.

  • I kept on using NICU bottles/nipples the whole time he was on bottles at home (2+ mo) before EBF. I tried a couple bottles, but the reason he wasn't BF'ing is because over 4 mo he'd had so much in his mouth between NICU and home that he wound up nipple confused and since he had choke/brady issues it was a mess.

I'm not sure what nipples your NICU used but they'll say they're disposable but are generally reusable like any other nipple. They throw everything out in NICU - pacifier hits the ground? Trash. I found my nipple brand (NICU one) on Amazon and they weren't selling them as a one-time-use-only thing. HTH.

When we first brought her home we used the Nuk bottles and nipples.  They worked well for about 2 weeks, and then she started having a lot of gas.  We switched over to the Dr. Brown's and haven't looked back.  She went from Level 1 to Level 2--we never used the preemie nipple.  I just bought some Level 3, but she's not ready for those yet.

GL! It really is a lot of trial and error! Smile

  • We saved the hospital ones and reused them for a bit then moved to Dr. Browns with the preemie nipple and then level one nipple.  We realized she was having a hard time with he standard nipple....she had a bad latch BF and bottle feeding and would make a complete mess.  We just started using Born Free bottles and she us doing much better with the wider nipple.

DS too!  Now he is on size 2 nipples, and eating like a champ.
