what would you prefer..travel related?

we will be making a road trip next month with our 7 month old twin boys. it would usually take 10 hours for us..but we've never gone with babies before! the boys do ok in the car, but the longest we've traveled is 5 hours and even that got a little rough for them.  we try to stop but it's just a long time to be in a carseat i am sure!   my mom will probably be with my husband and i so there will be 3 adults.  we were planning on driving through the night so the boys will sleep, but i can't be sure they will sleep all night in their car seats. if they do it would be much faster though, but when we get there we will be up all day on little sleep after driving.

my mom suggested stopping at a hotel part way. so maybe leave when the boys go to bed and stop halfway so we can sleep, then finish during the day..less awake time in the car for them but also sleep for us?

from your experience what's  better? coming home it all has to be during the day..ugh... tia

Re: what would you prefer..travel related?

  • We did a trip like that last summer, driving during naps, stopping for meals and a little play time, sticking to the usual routine as much as possible.  We did stay at a hotel half-way and made it into part of the vacation.  It went really well.  And, of course, I blogged about it if you want more details.

  • If they were a little older I would say more awake time is manageable.  I used to drive all night in the past but it can be dangerous as well so I am now more paranoid about such things.  I would stay at a hotel and make it part of the trip with such young ones.  My eldest made a few days of 12-hour drives at 2, but he literally watched DVDs all day and it wasn't optimal.
