Working Moms

When do you work out?

I would like to go running before work some mornings during the week, but am not sure if I will be messing up DS's naptime. He gets up at 5:30am and I need to leave the house by 7:30 am for work. That is 2 hours, but I am feeding, changing, sometimes bathing, and need to get ready myself. Also, I am worried that I will interfere with his nap schedule since the few mornings that I have tried running, he fell asleep in the jogging stroller and did not nap at the regular time after we returned. If you work out during the week, how do you do it?? Thanks!!

Re: When do you work out?

  • I am also wondering this, since I start a new job tomorrow.  I will work 2-3 days per week right by my gym, but I am not thrilled about the idea of using their showers to get ready before work.  I tried running at 5:30 which had worked well, but if I get up a couple of times during the night with the baby, I have no motivation.  I also don't want to give up my family time after work, so I am running out of options.

I have 3 choices of workout times: my first choice is lunchtime, second is right after work, and lastly after DS goes to bed.

Maybe instead of running, he could hangout in a bouncer while you do a DVD like 30 day shred. That would be better IMO.

  • I run Monday and Wednesday evening and Saturday mornings.  Plus I try and get a good weight lifting session in one day of the week (this doesn't always happen though).

I get up Saturdays before DD is up and then Monday and Wednesdays DH get to spend  60-90 minutes with DD while I run.

Yes its time away but I am a pretty wife and mother when I have gotten a good workout in and plus I think that time is good for DD and DH to have together.

It's one my schedule every week and I try working out like any other appointment I have.

  • I don't work out in the morning.  It's just not my thing.  I work out at lunch for an hour.  There is a gym in my hospital.

Or depending on the weather, I take DD for a jog in her stroller after work.  If it's too hot or cold out, I go running on our treadmill at 7 p.m. after she is in bed.  I manage to work out at least 5 times per week.  It's a huge priority for me.

I go during my lunch every work day.  I usually take a long lunch and adjust my leave schedule by 15 min-this gives me time for 40 min workout, quick shower and refresh make-up.  I'll eat lunch at my desk when I return to work.

  • I work out nearly every day on my lunch break (we have a gym at work), I go to the Y one night a week for spin class (and alternatively, DH goes to the Y one night a week - in addition to day time) for a master swim class).  DH is third shift, 4 on/2 off - when he doesn't work the night before, I get up much earlier to get a longer workout in the morning.  And extended workouts on the weekend.

  • I get up at 5 because it's the only time I'm consistent about working out.  But DH is home and can take care of the kids if they get up before I'm done (it's never happened--they always sleep through).

If I couldn't do that, I'd try to run during my lunch break (or work through lunch and run in the afternoon).  I'm terrible about working out after work or after the kids go to bed.  I'm just too tired.

I would try running with the baby and see how it goes.  If it's screwing up naps, you can make a change.

  • DH and I (now that his schedule permits it) switch off picking LO up from DC. ON days he does I workout.  Saturdays we take turns. So I typically go MWF and Saturday. I change at work and go straight to the gym because if I step foot in the house and see LO it's not happening.  I also recommend Jillian Michael's 30 day shred for a good quick 20 minute workout...for more you can always add a second session. Maybe after LO falls asleep for the night, or wake up at 5. I have to get up at 4:30, so I can't get up any earlier than that without being impossible to be around.

  • I try to get in two good workouts on the weekend, so at least I have that under my belt. If I can get in one good workout during the work week I am happy, it either happens at 6:00 a.m., or 7:30ish p.m., which is harder for me, because that is when I am winding down and trying to relax. I also get out at lunch for little 15-20 minute walks, I try to take the stairs whenever I can, I do squats and lunges whenever I think about it at home, I lift the baby overhead, etc. You can squeeze in a lot of exercise into your day if you stop thinking you have to either go to the gym, or do intense cardio to consider it a workout.
