Thawed breast milk good 24 hours from when...?

Today I attempted to thaw my first bit of frozen breast milk - forgive me if this is a stupid question, but when does the 24 hours begin that it's good from? When it is removed from the freezer (I put it in the fridge to thaw, so it took a while) or 24 hours from when it's thawed?

I messed up tonight and gave her a different bottle (we give a bottle once a day) - I should probably just resign myself to having to toss this other milk, but thought I'd check.

Is there a better way to thaw it than putting it in the fridge? Room temp or running under water or anything?

Thanks!

  • I start counting 24hrs once it's fully thawed.

  • I just started using all of my freezer stash too.  I stuck mine in the fridge to thaw, and about 4 hours later, it was still frozen solid.  I figure that 24 hour clock shouldn't really start until after it starts to melt, so the math I am using is more like 28-30 hours after it comes out of the fridge.

You can go from the freezer right to a dish of hot water to heat it up and feed right away.  It seems to take me about 15 minutes to do this, so I prefer the fridge to hot water method, which is more like 5 minutes for me.

  • I like to thaw in cold water and this defrosts it and still makes it cold so I can put it in the fridge if I like.  It takes 5 minutes or so.
