We have the one that looks like steps in DS room. It really depend on what you have to store and the size of it and most importantly if the kids will open drawers too see their stuff bc honestly it holds a ton of crap in DS room that he rarely pulls out. Also, at first I bought too many small bins, those are good as junk drawers like people have in their kitchen bilut a waste of space for anything else, I now have mostly medium size and one large. My advice is to measure out the size of the bins and the stuff you want to put in them and then put your stuff into a bin or box you have to figure out your needs. The other thing I often consider is getting one or two shelves instead for things like DS' puzzles. And lastly, do not expect any system to solve all your needs for example his Legos and Duplis are in one bin each but the plates do not fit. But I like it. Oh, and if you get the straight one you can use it as extra seating but that is likely something that will not really happen.

I am debating getting the steps one and then the one that lays horizontal (for extra seating). Good to know on the size of bins. I wish we had one close to us but we dont sooo I might have to just get more then I think I will need!

I would do one large, more than that would be a waste because you would only have a few bins IMO. Then I would get 3 medium and 5 small, that would be one extra medium to swap out with small, if you really want you can get one extra large with a one top and it could always go on the floor, I am only 5' ft 1 and the large comes to my knee. Oh, and those recs we're for the stepped one, not sure if the other uses the same amount of bins. My thought, it is hard material and not comfy for sitting, the top will be used for storage for either small things as decoration or large things...we have DS' banks, globe, state puzzle and state electronic. Game and a Lego bin on top. The top is messy but at least it is holding stuff. And the lowest step can be a seat but make sure it does not become stairs. Another thing, nod not buy tops for all the bins because they are a waste, kids do not work that way and you lose about an inch of storage that way. And the shelves cost money but if you do not mind youight want one of those, like I said above, I sometimes wish I had one.

We have two of step-type ones in our playroom, with a small desk in between them, and I couldn't be happier. Originally, I bought a mix of small, medium and large bins, plus two shelves. A few weeks ago, I went back to Ikea and got a few more small bins to replace the shelves, and I swapped out one of the large bins for a medium and a small. I like the small bins because DD can put all of her dinosaur toys in one, bring that bin out to the livingroom, play, and return them all. No digging through a larger bin to find what she wants.
I also made picture/word labels to tape on the front of the bins, which has been very helpful.

My sister has those in her kid's rooms. We went with the Expedit type which you can turn horizontally or use vertically. We have done both. They are too high to use as a seat, but you can use them horizontally and store things on top which your child can reach. I feel the Expedit is sturdier than the one you are looking at.

We placed two vertical ones in DSs closet to hold toys. Works great for us. He can't get to the very top shelfs without a step stool so we keep the small bins up there. I agree to consider what you have to store when you buy the bins. We fill up two large bins with legos. We use smaller one for things like matchbox cars and pop em pals which he has few of. We also have the expidite (?) that pp mentioned. We are still in the process of organizing those but we are using them as book shelves and to hold his animals and dinosaurs.
We have Trofast that I got off CL for a steal. I just bought the bins new and painted it to match his room.I like the medium bins for legos and the like, the bigger ones hold his instruments and his cars and the small bins have art supplies. I don't think you need the tops. I thought they wasted space.
We have the Expedit and we use it moe as a bookshelf. With some storage but not things he has to pull out too much except on the bottom row. I did not want him to feel like he needs to climb to get anything. HTH
They have a lot of images on google of how to use Trofast for toy storage. It is pretty rugged.
