Trying to Get Pregnant

Anyone have dyshidrotic eczema?

It is a really super itch blistering ezcema that you get on your hands and feet. Fortunately, I only get it on my hands and not my feet.

Anyways, I have to treat it when it really flares up with topical steriod cream. I have read online that most doctors allow you to continue to use them while pregnant. Then I have also read that there has been no human testing conducted, but topical steriods have been linked to birth defects in mice.

So with that being said, I am afraid to TTC while using it. I went all this month not using it, and then I had a flare up that kept me up for hours in the night and had to use it.  I am going to call the my dermatolgist tomorrow.

Any experience with using steriods, excema, etc? Thoughts?

Re: Anyone have dyshidrotic eczema?

  • Mine actually didn't flare up as much when I was pregnant. I had to be really careful to avoid triggers, so I don't know if this was what worked, but I ended up not using a steroid cream at all when I was pregnant. (Of course, I gave birth at the end of summer, and it's usually the worst in the winter.)

Maybe ask your doctor if there's anything else you can try before you get pregnant so that you can possibly find something else that works for you?

  • My husband has it really bad and uses the 1% cortisone creams from Aveeno on a daily basis and moisturizers to keep it from getting terrible, but its still not great. I have tried the non steroidal all-natural creams on him from the health food store, he was not impressed. Those are not really designed to penetrate palm and foot skin. He has had strong steroid creams prescribed to him in the past as well as oral steroids, which work but are obviously stronger. I know he has taken a Benadryl when its gotten to point of making him insane with itching.

Do you use the strong prescription strength steroid creams? Or the over the counter stuff? I have heard that Benadryl is safe to take while pregnant. Maybe you can try some of the all natural eczema treatments when its mild, then the 1% when you really need it, then take a Benadryl when you have a bad flare up.

I just asked my DH about your case. He said if you aren't pregnant now, get the eczema under control to gone if you can with the creams, then do whatever you can to prevent it for the time you are TTC or pregnant. He said a list of things that set it off for him. Limit any contact with water on your hands. Try not to do the dishes, or use a chlorinated pool, try not to wear gloves that make your hands sweat. Moisturize all the time with a non-scented eczema lotion. He loves the Aveeno Eczema Therapy, its natural without steroids. Don't put anything drying on your hands, like perfumed products or hand sanitizer, those are all alcohol. Dry = Bad.

    GL!!!

  • I actually just broke out in something that *might* be this. I have tiny blisters all over both hands - they look like little bubbles in some places. I've never gotten it before and haven't had a chance to go to the dr. yet. Does this sound like what you have?

  • I'm kind of granola-y, and avoid medication whenever possible.  Have you ever tried diet-related changes?  I have several family members that had debilitating eczema for their entire lives until they removed gluten from their diet and the eczema completely cleared up.  If they eat it, it flares up again.  I know diet isn't the answer to everything, but it may be worth a shot...

I don't know about your condition, but do you what Class the medication is? (If it is prescription). Class B is the safest, and my doctor has said a Class C would be acceptable after 1st tri if the benefits outweighed the concerns. You should be able to find the Class online and I would check with your doctor. I am on two meds that are not safe for pregnancy, one is worse so they changed it for TTC, the other they told me to take until i get a positive test and then they will switch it.

If you had a fever within the last couple of days it could be hand foot and mouth disease (if you came in contact with anyone that had that). I recently got it as a gift from my daughter and it was how you describe but I had a fever first. If not, I'm no help - sorry. Just wanted to give you a heads up. :)

Sounds like it to me. You will know if it eventally dries up and your skin peels off in the area. Then the process will start all over again. Mine just came up out of the blue. I would change all your hand soaps to natural stuff and don't use any scented lotions. I have found aquaphor and petroleum jelly to work best. GL!

Thank you so much! It is the first time since being diagnosed to find someone else with the condition. I have tried a million different lotions and creams. The one that has been working best for me is Aquaphor.

I have swtiched to all unscented, nautral products such as hand soaps, shampoos- everything. I switched my barsoap to unscented natural glycerine soap. I think that may have helped. The bumps started in February. I finally went to the dermatologist May 1st. Seems like things are getting better. I have only used my prescribed steriod cream once this month so far.

I use to use a lot of hand gel and obvioulsy have quit that. Hoping I am one of those lucky mamas whose eczema clears up once I am pregnant!

Thank you sooo much for all of the information! Great to hear from someone else! If I find out anything else I will let you know so you can pass on to hubby. GL!

I was at the beach last week, renting a cottage, so I thought it was possibly a reaction to new soap. Today one of the blistery areas on my fingertip has turned red - they now look like blood blisters.
